What a result!

Scottish Premier Rangers
comment on the article

I must say I was extremely nervous coming into this tie but the boys have done themselves proud and we are still marching onwards on all fronts. The troops just seem to be finding that extra bit of something needed to keep us going.

Some are still claiming we play anti-football but as Jim Beglin on ITV4 said tonight, it's not anti-football, it's intelligent football. And as for the actual 2-0 result, to be only the third team to beat Sporting at home this season (the others being a lower division side in the early round of the Portuguese Cup and Man Utd) is a marvellous feat.

Bring on Fiorentina. They showed against Everton that they don't travel too well against a typically British side.

Cheers! ok

You're bang on about Torres. Pool and Chelsea should hang their heads in shame playing the crap they do with the money at their disposal.

Rangers are playing to their strengths.

With all due respect, your comment is meaningless Jake. All that matters is this season. i have yet to see anyone say that this is the "greatest achievement by a Scottish club in Europe ever." Give me a link to the thread where someone has said that and i will join you in pointing out certain facts!

Regardless, the fact that we are in a European semi-final, after the debacle of PLG's stewardship of the club, is a significant achievement by Smith in a very short period of time AND without much in the way of financial backing.

Yes, we don't play slick 'Arsenal-esque' football but given the resources at his disposal, who can blame Smith for his pragmatism?

Anyone who tries to belittle this, i find bizarre.

It is possible to play attractive football on a budget but you won't win much!

Rangers have done a great job this season all things considered.

now how can people say that rangers didnt play inteligent football last night??? They defended and let sporting pass it about and have lots of the ball, pass it about and make runs, apart from a few odd chances that was it...and this led to them being tired very quickly and rangers could then counter on that.... rangers also made a lot of slick passes about the park and made sporting run for it...so tell me how that is not inteligent football.

Well done to Rangers - they played well and although the did ride their luck (isnt that what good teams do?) they deserved to win

Hope you can go all the way

It wasnt even anti-football... if Rangers win the cup, it will be the worst team ever to win it.... Two games and for the vast majority of both games you showed absolutely nothing other than you defend and take whatever chances you get. And no, it is not inteligent football. Its the kind of football that keeps people of stadiums as they do not want to pay to watch paint dry...

What a muppet you are...from a dyed in the wool sheep shagger who hates all Glasgow teams when it comes to domestic stuff..my hats off to Rangers...if it had been Man U or Chelsea it would be wonderful stuff..but because its the protestant side of Glasgow its Sh*te and boring. Grow up and leave the bigot crap aside...but i must say that applies to both sides...did anyone see the scarf that a rangers fan had..."NO TIMS IN EUROPE"..how sad is that..seriously i was proud as a jock to see Rangers do the business well. Cant wait to see you in the Scottish Cup final and ruin the Quad.

"Two games and for the vast majority of both games you showed absolutely nothing other than you defend and take whatever chances you get."

eh, whats the problem here?

MON's team that got to Seville didnt play Arsenal-esque football either, 3 huge centre backs letting no one past, couple of really fast wing backs, Thompson, lennon and petrov did their bit, and sutton/hartson partnering Henrik. And no one cared cos he almost won you the UEFA Cup.

If Rangers make it to the final, and Bayern have 60 shots to our one and we win 1-0, then so be it. i would love to see us playing "better" football, but we played great, great stuff under Advocaat and only got so far as the last 16 with him.

Rangers deserved their win because they were tactically more astute than Sporting. They did not play well in the first leg, but did not go gung-ho as Scottish sides of the past would have done, and settled for 0-0 - not a bad result. Last night - again - they were superb on the break. They play to their strengths - counter-attacking - which was why they beat Celtic recently even though their rivals had much more possession.
I hope Rangers go on to win the tournament - I reckon Bayern Munich used up all of their traditional luck last night. The sending-off of the Getafe player Ruben de la Red was a shocking decision, an absolute disgrace.
