Thursday's Uefa Cup action

Uefa Cup Rangers
comment on the article

Evening all.

It's been an exciting week of European football for British teams - but is it over yet? Not a chance.

Forget about the Champions League, tonight is all about the Uefa Cup and specifically Rangers, who are in action in the second leg of their quarter-final with Sporting in Lisbon.

You can follow all the action from Estadio Jose Alvalade, and get goal updates from the other quarter-final ties, here:

Gutted about Getafe, but forgot to say well done to Rangers. From an Aberdeen fan in peace.

2 of the 4 semi finalists we beat comfortably. I just can't believe how we missed out, and how Zenit have got so far, they didn't strike me as the best outfit in our group, yet the luck of the draw as they say...

haha! a liverpool fan saying a team deserved to win after being in a 2 goal lead! you never say that a.c milan (2005) or arsenal (tuesday) deserved to win despite liverpool diving to get a penalty to win/draw the match.

Getafe were awesome last night and totally outplayed there German counterparts with only 10 men for 120 minutes. What Getafe has achieved this season cannot be underestimated and I doubt that anything quite like it has ever been seen before or will be seen again in the future anywhere in Europe. Las summer we lost over 10 players and signed 9 more including a new coach. Entered the Uefa Cup for the first time in our history and were within a whisker of qualifying for the semi finals after knocking out AEK Athens and Benfica on route by beating Bayern Munich. This season with Michael Laudrup as coach, we have developed to become one of the most outstanding teams in La Liga this year, well regarded as a team playing the best football.

It is hard to say if the success this season is down to luck or good planning, no doubt that we have seen good players grow into exceptional players such as De La Red, Belenquer, Pablo Hernandez, Contra, Casquero, etc, etc Many of which you will see in the Euro Championships this season. No doubt we are going to be rebuilding during the summer again because after these exploits the Vultures are already circling to rob us of our talent. But do not doubt that while we have our president Angel Torres at the helm this could just be the start of the good times.

I leave you with a quote from Oliver Kahn from the game last night that sums up how special this season has been………

“It’s like I’ve just been saying in the dressing room: I’ve probably played 140 times in Europe, against Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid, but that’ll all be nothing compared to what we’ve been through tonight. When we meet up again in ten years’ time, we won’t be talking about Real and United, we’ll talk about Getafe. I can’t remember ever having seen or played in a game quite like that. I’ve never before let in three goals and still gone through. I don’t know what to say, and I’ve already been through a lot in Europe.“

Oliver Kahn 10/04/2008

We were 1 minute away from qualifying for the semi finals and bein strong contenders to win it overaul, do not doubt my words this season in this competition the best team has gone out of the Uefa Cup.

Football OWES Getafe after last night.

Maybe football owed Bayern after 1999, that might explain it. I hope one day Getafe gets what was stolen from the last night.

As a Barca fan I'm very proud of what that Getafe has achieved and how they played with 10 men for 120 minutes.

I wish them ALL the best for the cup final next week
