Is this Radcliffe's year?

Olympics
comment on the article

Paula Radcliffe's place in the pantheon of British athletics if already guaranteed, yet the 34-year-old knows she has unfinished business at the Olympics.

Despite having won golds at every other major championship, Radcliffe is yet to win a medal of any colour at the Olympics.

She was favourite for marathon gold in Athens four years ago, but was forced to quit with 6km to go because of a bad reaction to anti-inflammatory drugs.

BBC Sport's Matt Slater spoke to Radcliffe in central London yesterday.

The marathon world record holder looked happy and relaxed and seemed to be eagerly anticipating the Beijing Games.

She brushed off concerns about humidity and pollution in the Chinese capital and insisted this would be her best chance to win Olympic gold.

"I've got a good chance this year - probably my best shot," she said.

"An Olympic gold would be right up there in my list of achievements - it's the one you really want to win."

What do you think? Will Radcliffe win Olympic gold this year?

She has missed most of 2006/7 following the birth of her daughter, Isla, and has withdrawn from this weekend's London Marathon because of a toe injury.

Yet she is an athlete of undoubted quality and she and husband Gary Lough have been preparing for the event with their usual thoroughness and precision.

So what do you think? Is this Radcliffe's year?

I think some Kenyan runners are not competing due to the pollution and marathon runners are not also experts on pollution usually.
They are also very vulnerable as they have to avoid all kinds of things as their immune system is always stressed with used up reserves due to the nature of LD running bodywt is reduced to minimum etc.
In short its not truly the healthiest of events for a whole host of reasons and frankly how most do as well as they do amazes me the risk of injury plus dehydration upset stomach etc I'll stick to a nice 3 mile walk thrice weekly inc one down to the local for a pint !!
I both like and admire Paula and wish nothing but good things for her esp a nice gold medal but she is already a winner in my book

I do support Paula to win medals.

Paula goes for it.

I appreciate what Paula said on Sunday that you can protest to put your message across taking advantage of torch relay to win attention. But use violence is a shame, especially where CHILDREN and DISABLE people were around.

Shame to those violent protestors.

Provided the Marathon has a realtively flat course, Paula should do well.
However, there are hilly sections, not so good for her.

What we want to see in China is;
People who want to take part (and want to win) - enjoy the experience and learn from it.

What we don't want is someone (who quits if they are not going to win - and then find excuses to justify it when they face the backlash) taking up the place of an athelete who would love the chance to compete and benefit from being there.

This Sunday many athletes will be exhausted and limp across the line in London - that's the spirit we want.

Any one who is found to be guilty if cheating in all its guises including taking drugs should be banned from competing. Anyone found not giving total commitment should be stripped of financial support.

Winning is important - how you win or take part is more important.

Yes of course she has a chance to Win this summer. and anybody that pathetically write her of is a fool and really ignorant about athletics. athens was 4 years ago. She has clearly come back mentally stronger and I really really do wish her all the best. It will be the event to watch, although some of the swimming events must turn out to be just as thrilling.
Go Paula Go.

Paula Radcliffe is an amazing athlete. I would love to see her win the Marathon gold in Beijing. She has dedicated her life to becoming the best female long distance runner this country has ever seen - and I for one, along with many others, are and should be immensely proud of her! People seem to be very quick in slating her for her performance in Athens. I'd like to know how many sub 2.15 Marathons these people have run!! Then and only then would they be qualified to pass an informed judgement. Whatever the outcome we should be 100% behind the GB team! Oh, for the record ... I've run 10 marathons... Go Paula Go!!!

Some marathon runners have in fact actually died trying to finish recently.
THATS WHAT WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE.
Peters took wrong turn and was trying to almost crawl across to finish it was painful to watch.
Was it 1960 Olympics ?

I hope she does not win! She is one of the most un-sportsman like people I have ever come across!

what exactly makes her so un sportsman like? im sorry but ive never seen anything to suggest such a thing. i think u may be confusing it with a will to win which is exactly what it takes to reach the top of any sport
