Jerez Grand Prix - race thread

Moto GP
comment on the article

Sunday lunchtime, racing in daylight... after the floodlit season opener in the desert, now it feels like the MotoGP season is really getting underway with the second race of the campaign in Jerez.

Saturday's qualifying threw up some interesting things - Jorge Lorenzo followed up his impressive debut in Qatar with a storming display as he smashed the lap record to earn pole position, ahead of fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa.

Colin Edwards claimed third, despite overdoing it so badly on one corner that he skidded along on his right knee and elbow but managed to recover, right himself and carry on and even found time to wave to the crowd.

Valentino Rossi came a disappointing fifth, with defending champion Casey Stoner cutting a deeply unhappy figure in seventh.

And James Toseland has every reason to be proud of his eighth place on the grid, having been laid low by a severe chest infection in the days leading up to the race.

So, what are your feelings, omens, inklings, predictions and general thoughts about the weekend? We want to hear them....

Its clear that most of the responses now coming through have not read the original source of this debate.

Nobody has slated him as a person, nobody has slated his riding, or his ability, its the over-the-top reaction to his 6th place finishes and title aspirations that I have a problem with.

1)Fantastic ride!!
2)Only 0.6secs behind Rossi!! But how many behind the leader?
3)Im going to be a title contender, YAY!!
4)Podium in Spain!!
5)When I get the new engine.
6) Oh dear I dont think the new engine is coming before estoril..

These are quotes taken from your golden boy and his fans.SHUT UP ROOKIE!!

Yet we all agree that based on his current form (chest infection, awww) and current 2007 bike, its not possible to win the title or possibly even a race.

So surely, if you were his advisor, would you not advise him to steer clear of giving such implausible and highly unlikely statements to the press??

That is how this started (by me I might add) if you care to read through all the JT is fantastic responses.

MPV 2409 You clearly think its ridiculous that the Spanish press are biased towards undeserving riders,so you must agree then that the JT hype is also ridiculous...plus if you go to Catalunnya you will see a sea of rossi yellow...obviously the spanish fans aren't as easily led by their press and are a little more realistic, unlike the british fans

Firstly: Correct, the idea that you MUST support your nation may well be ridiculous, but is it not so that supporting ones countymen is far more common than either supporting other nations or hating your own?

RESPONSE:

yes indeed, but this debate is beginning to sound like the 606 Football forum. if your not from Manchester you cant support City smiley

If someone makes constructive criticism about a rider based on fact, then debate that, dont turn it into a Cultural and thereby personal attack.

**************************
Secondly: Of course this forum is frequented by non-brits, but as the name would indicate the overwhelming majority of posters are british, so assuming that a particular poster is british is a fair assumption to make. And yes there are many millions of Motogp supporters who are non-brits (in fact in the UK motogp is far less popular than other western european countries) but iI sincerely doubt they check the bbc message boards!!

RESPONSE:
Thats not the point, you should not turn this into a cultural thing. This forum is tiny enough, as soon as you start with the nationality thing, its members will reduce, then what are you left with? A forum full of Biased JT supporters and opinions, where is the balanced view in that?

****************************
If you want to see favouritism, just check the spanish press (before you jump to any conclusions about xenophopia I am in fact spanish)......rossi was only ever hailed as being lucky at the height of his dominance and Alex Criville was always better than Doohan, but never got treated as well.............hmmmmm, just a little bit of favouritism there don't you think??!!??!!

I dont dare to comment on other nations, but that is the beauty of this place, we can talk, laugh, take the piss, have a go, but keep it constructive and then come back again for more tomorrow.

Jet13on,

To get to the top you have to aim for the top. If you think, I’ll be happy to finish in the Top 10, then you’ll be happy to finish in to Top 10 and will never improve. By coming out with his thoughts Toseland is in fact just trying to push himself along and pump himself up for the race. From what I have heard, Lorenzo has the biggest head in the world – though apparently he is pretty talented and I think that he has done well in the first couple of races.

I think that Toseland has acquitted himself quite well too. Despite no GP race experience before Qatar, he has finished the first two races in 5th and then 6th and qualified on the front row once. In the 2 races so far, Toseland has finished ahead of (in no particular order):- Capirossi, Melandri, Stoner, Edwards, Hayden, Nakano, Hopkins, Vermuelen and is doing better than I expected of him if I am honest.

Ps. Toseland is riding a 2008 Yamaha, with 2007 evolution engine

PPs. MotoGP Phil - I have!

PPPs. Ronraffery - your in the wrong place!

Donnie Brasco-yes I know but 606 is censoring the Max Mosley story which is a damn sight more important than anything on this blog. For what it's worth I am an active 60yr old biker who thought the Jerez race was great.

As it goes I pretty much agree with you there, although I don't think that it's the British fans who are unrealistic but the press hype that surrounds someone like JT.

Well responded!! I wasn't trying to get into the whole cultural thing, there's enough of that on the F1 pages, I got drawn into it as I had my guard up about it, I'm half spanish and half english so gets confused sometimes laugh ......but still you're right, pointless rant by me, I humbly back down!! smiley

More than anything, I want to see an exciting competitive season that goes right to the wire......and just for the record I want Rossi to be crowned king again, even if it means beating JT!!!

Donnie Brascoe - I hear that. And I like your analysis:

Aim for the top - true
Acquitted himself well - agreed

That I have no problem with, its just (Sorry for the repitition), the outlandish claims when you know full well that your chances are pretty small, serves no purpose other than to make you silly in the eyes of other riders. And I do believe that respect from other riders is a far greater honour to these guys than fans who come and go.

MPV - Rossi has a big chance as always, but Casey is King and will reign supreme!! smiley

Nice one chaps, very entertaining debate, looking forward to the next keyboard battle.
