Relegation for the Rams

Premier League Derby County
comment on the article
Paul Jewell

Before this season, the only certainties in life were death and taxes.

But Derby's performance in the Premier League added a third - the inevitability they would be relegated at the end of the season.

Today brought confirmation of the drop following a painful and sometimes embarassing eight months, although the Rams at least went down fighting thanks to Tito Villa's two goals and a pulsating second half against Fulham.

After the wonder of Wembley, Derby's Premier dream was shattered early in the season as they found themselves smashed by Spurs, licked by Liverpool, annihilated at Arsenal and whipped by West Ham - and all that before Billy Davies hit the self-destruct button!

Paul Jewell couldn't arrest the inexorable slide in an uninspiring 18 games with a team which simply couldn't compete.

The fact that the focus switched so early on to planning for a swift return to the top tier sums up the level of failure this season.

What's needed in the next campaign is stability and the stauch support of the club's fantastic fans - and in that, perhaps we have a fourth certainty in life.

Bristol City fan here, don't worry, if we go up we'll beat any records you set

But surely it was worth it?

spurs fan in peace here
very sad to here you've gone down, but you didnt have a good enough team this season to stay up, maybe apart from miller and perhaps villa.

i remember when derby were in the premier league last time round they stayed in for a good few seasons. i remember the first spurs game i went to was in 1999 against derby and we were loosing 1-0 to you at home and got a lcuky goal at the end. derby were a hard team to beat last time they were in the premier league. remember mart poom and claudio raneri great players for you. you need players like these to get back into the premier league and stay up.

good luck for next season.

How much money do you get for being relegated? im sure it was a fair bit if you just build on the cash for next season you might be able to jump back up with a decent enough squad to survive

Some would say we came up to soon, and it might not see the club recover, might break many of the players etc.

But it did land us 40 mill or however much its worth, plus without being in the prem, Pearson wouldnt have been approached to come in, and the investment from the US wouldnt have happened. It also showed Davies wasnt up to the job, especially in terms of where he gets his signings from (ie england and scotland only)
So in the long run you could say its worth it, to get a manager in with premiership experience, knowledge of the world market, and the investment needed to keep us in the prem in the future.

Law mentioned in his last prediction that he predicted all 3 promoted clubs will regelated straight back next season. I am kind of agree after seeing who is on top and how tight it is.
The gap between PL and Championship sides is huge now.
Don't worry Derby, next season I think there will be 3 clubs fighting for not breaking all your records set.

In the words of a character from a well known Action Movie:

'WE'LL BE BACK'.

Terrible season. Learn from it and let's move on. Planning for Prem football has to be so much better next time.

UP THE RAMS!!

in my opinion they are the worst team ever in prem league history...even watfrod on 15 points or watever they had managed to challenge in games...

16 goals is pathetic and what makes it funny is ther eonly win was when newcastle were at there very worst this year and it took a wonder strike from miles out!!!

they are, in my opinion, the worst prem league team i've seen.

and people saying that if paul jewell is that good then you'll be rite back up there...

hmmmm...i dont think you people know alot about football.

first of all a few players will want to leave...eg miller!

second the mental side of the relegation so fast and only winning one game...

and thirdly the championship is a very good league with the like of west brom watford and stoke (yes i no they wont be there next season)

but there is also some teams, like palace, been picking up again of late.

jewell is a good manager but i think this may be beyond him

Yes, the Championship is a competitive league but it is not the PL, where a club's confidence can be quickly shot to smithereens by playing decent opposition week in/week out.

Sunderland went down with a record low points total; the next season they regrouped under Keane and won the CCC.

Derby might only have £10m to spend but that is a considerable amount in contrast to sides like Blackpool, Carlisle (likely), Norwich.

As for Jewell, it was a risk for him to come to Derby, a no-win situation. He will have a point to prove and he has a proven record in the CCC. He has not become a bad manager overnight and I am glad we have him in charge.

An Arsenal fan, I am sure the experience will hold the players in good stead for next season. Some could say it was the worst thing Derby could have done, getting promoted. Yet I believe the experience will be invaluable. I can echo the sentiments of people saying that Derby shouldn't be mocked. No team should be kicked when they are down. Best of luck Derby County F.C.
