Britain strike gold three times

comment on the article

Bradley Wiggins got Great Britain off to a golden start on day one of the World Track Cycling Championships and the man from Maida Vale started another gold rush on day two.

Wiggins, who already has the individual pursuit gold to his name, Edward Clancy, Geraint Thomas and Paul Manning defeated Denmark to defend their title in a world record time.

The British quartet bettered the time set by the Australia team at the 2004 Athens Olympics, setting a new mark of three minutes 56.318 seconds.

Manning said afterwards that they will need to go quicker again to win gold in Beijing later this summer. But the Britons surely go to China as title favourites.

Victoria Pendleton came away from last year's championships in Mallorca with three golds and got off to a perfect start on day two.

The 27-year-old defended the women's team sprint with BMX world champion Shanaze Reade.

Rebecca Romero saw her switch from rowing to cycling pay off as she won her first world title in the individual pursuit.

The 28-year-old, who won silver in the quadruple skulls at the Athens Olympics, beat American defending champion Sarah Hammer in 3:30.501.

At this rate, the question could well be can Great Britain exceed the seven golds they won at last year's championships?

Tonight's GB performances weren't just good/great/outstanding/awesome, they were SHOCKING.

The men's team pursuit, as astonishing as their performance was, it was hardly unexpected.

Rebecca Romero was on a different planet compared with the world pursuit champion. And Victoria Pendleton in the team sprint? Forget it - Shanaze Reade was fair competition against the world's best, but I can't even think of a word to describe the way Pendleton distanced the Chinese in one lap (250m).

Then there was Chris Hoy outsprinting Theo Bos. THEO BOS!! O.M.G. I've never seen anyone go so fast as Theo Bos all by themself, but Hoy edged past him!

What, I say WHAT, are GB's cycling team doing right?!!

I like to think: natural talent + great preparation + great support + team spirit.

Here's hoping Vicky and Chris can bring home at least a couple more golds!

It is frighteningly good isn't it?!

Hope they keep it up. Wonderful coverage by the Beeb. But haven't they got a little too excited as if Bradley is about to win a Gold in the Kieren (Shame for Hoy!) , that'll be four he's aiming for with a Madison Gold up for grabs as part of the Manx dynamo pairing, with Cavendish.
Is it something in the water on the Isle of Man that prduces all this talent!?

Yeah there were one or two errors in the http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/cycling/7316798.stm article.

As well as the keirin error pointed out by FatBoyW, the article talks about Lewis being favourite for BMX title (too many motoring/F1 metaphors being used causing confusion for our author, perhaps?).

Nevertheless, I'm only nitpicking. Keep the articles and coverage coming - I can't get enough!

Just like to thank the BBC for today's main sport website page - lovely to see. Maybe a more humourous headline might be "BBC admits Cycling exists!"

__cats I'm going to stop my nitpicking! I can't spell and meant to say 'pairing with the Manx Dynamo Cavendish'

Anyway I am SOOO excited by all this success! BC have got it very very right. Its hard work, honesty, clarity, belief and aiming high that has got 'em there.
As one of the BC Coaches says 'Shoot for the moon adn if you miss you'll still be in the stars!' What a firmament of stars British Cycling has - and please don't forget the wonder boys on the road too hopefully we will see this grow with the BCs help

Great to see sporting success finally filter onto bbc homepage! couldn't manage the 10 o'clock news last night though.
Great blanket coverage - still a few interviews being held whilst racing on. Got to have been the best night for British sport in decades - two WRs and three World Championship golds in one day - cannot think of any GB sporting day to top it. Super Thursday it should be called......

It's great to see the profile of a sport really being raised like this - and the stadium seems to bring a cracking atmosphere with it. I'm no great cycling fan or expert, but could not figure out how someone like Pendleton failed to even get on the shortlist for sports personality last year with such a record, when others who had done less in their sports were included. Not that sports personality is the be all and end all - but hopefully now the recognition for these athletes will be closer to what they deserve. Meantime I'll look forward to some more of this - athletes who have trained hard, performing at their peak and enjoying it - can't ask for much more.

A pure masterclass in preparation & mental attitude. There are huge lessons here for our under achieving sports personalities. Well done Cycling GB!
