If you read Mahela's lips, you could clearly see him say "cheat". The replay (at least to me) was not conclusive. It hit Powell's hand just above the glove. Did the ball hit the glove also? There is a doubt.

Benefit of the doubt goes to the batsman.

I think best thing to do is Mahela to apologize to Powell.

I dont think the match referee would take desciplinary action against the word "cheat".

It is not a racist comment. Powell hasnt complained either.

Hmmm. The code of conduct has for level 1:

# Using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting.

I would say that being called "cheat" is quite insulting. But if Powell and the WIndies haven't complained, as you say, best thing is for an apology and for everyone to move on.

No doubt if it were an England/Australian player saying that, the board would be swarming with WUMs calling for his banning.

For all the non Sri Lankans here, there's something which you probably don't know, in sinhalese we use a word which sounds something like "chi" meaning damn, I've heard Mahela use that word a million times whenever a catch goes down or an umpiring decision gets turned down, i haven't really seen the footage but this could be a cultural misinterpretation, like when Harbajan allegedly called symonds a monkey and had apparently said sumtin in hindi :P

The match was played between SL and WI. Why did you want to compare fans of the rest of the world and Indian fans in a thread created to congratulate SL for it's first ever test match victory against WI in WI.

As a Windies fan, I don't have much of a problem with what Mahela said in the heat of the moment. Powell was right not to respond.

However, it does seem as if the comment got to Powell, because he got out to a stupid shot the next over!

But that is Powell's fault, not Mahela's....

Hopefully, Mahela and Powell will have a chat about it afterwards, and that should be last we hear of it.

Well...Powell was the last man. He was living dangerously.

Powell had to bat another eight overs to save the match against Murali on one side bowling. That could have been a mini miracle.
