Well I'm sure the papers tomorrow will be full of despair as much as they would have been full of hype had England won. But if you want a balanced view of pros and cons for all of us who don't just think in black or white terms, try this:

Cons

* Defensively, England couldn't really handle the pace of thought and foot of Rubery, Malouda and Anelka
* Joe Cole, England's best player in recent months, Gerrard and Rooney were all fairly anonymous
* Becks wasn't fit enough to last much beyond half time and possibly due to this, was crossing from far too deep. I think this has to be the end of Beckham's era.
* In fact, the crossing all across the team was appalling! You can't play direct football and make a mess of all your crosses.
* Talking of which, England did go embarrassingly long-ball in the second half with Crouch on the pitch
* The massive technical gulf between the French and the English was exposed; English players often looked inept in posession and passing, in direct comparison to les classy blues

Pros

* France, a top-four international team, did not humiliate England, who are nowhere near the top four; their only goal was a penalty born of English errors
* In the first half England kept the ball fairly well and created a number of chances and half-chances
* Rooney and Gerrard provided movement up front and England did not attempt to play long balls up to them, as has been seen too many times in the past
* Barry, who is is a good ball-player but too slow to be a lone defensive midfielder, had able cover and support from the pacy Hargreaves, and both were accommodated in the same team as Joe Cole, Becks and Gerrard
* At different times, especially in the first half, Becks, Joe Cole, Gerrard, Downing and even Hargreaves got beyond the striker(s)
* Becks won his 100th cap; he's been a great servant to England
* Glen Johnson, who has been playing great for Pompey, got a well-deserved half hour
* Rio got his Captain's debut. Feel free to put this in the "cons" column depending on your view of him!
* Now Capello knows what he's up against!

I am not saying that Capello should be sacked, but I am surprised that England haven't gone for a Scottish manager before.

Scottish managers understsnd the British game and have the advantage of being able to speak English.

In the premier league it is the Scottish managers that are most represented nationality .at the top of the league (two in the top five)and have historically dominated the English top flight.

I think the best thing about Scottish managers is that they bring a level of tactical astuteness combined with a strong element of motivation. Two things that England need.

The only thing that I can see stopping this is national pride, but if the FA have already flirted with Swedes, Brazilians and Italians then waht more pride is there to lose?

You obviously don't understand the rivalry between Scotland and England! Or at least they like to think it's a rivalry winkeye

Lampard must play as a link with rooney as he will guarentee goals, put gerrard in the centre with barry/hargreaves and joe cole and bentley on the wings with rooney/crouch upfront

Can I just ask why people blame englands poor performances on too many foreign players in the English League?

Surely its because of these foreign players that the english league is the most talented league in the world. Get rid of the foriegn players and you've got a rubbish league where all OUR top players have to go abroad to play at a high level.

Or am I just mental???

I don't think you are being mental.
However at the commencement of the Premier League when UK club performances in Europe was about equal to now only some 20% of players were overseas imports.
Which meant that the home nations had 80% of the players to choose from.

Now if the figures I have seen are correct this percentage has dropped to around 30%.

With less than half the number of players to choose from it doesn't seem unreasonable that this has had an impact.

Yes it is because of the foreign players that the EPL is so good. But that quite obviously means there are less Enlgish players playing at a high level. It is harder for players to make the break through into the first team and players then end up dropping down a division.

Obviously you can't just get rid of the foreign players, but I don't think it would do your league, or national side, any harm if there were less foreign players in it than there currently are.

I love xenophobia. Obviously, the foreign players are not the problem. England players don't play on the streets, which is where brazilian kids learn to handle the ball and pass with accuracy and do the Cristiano-Ronaldo tricks.

Add character, resilience and commitment to the any team you can make out of England from their present crop of players, you'll have a winning national team.

In Australia, they made these facilities to keep the boys off the street, they played rugby and did training there and everything. Also, youth crime went down. I wonder what would happen if we did that here?????
quite honestly, walcott, rooney, lennon, and Antol Ferdinnd are our only hopes for the future.

ok it's a while since this match and basically a load of old tosh has been written by the press and fans alike on this site, England on their own are a pretty mediocre bunch of players who are lucky to be anywhere near the top 30 at the moment, which funny enough rules them out of the Euro 2008 tournament on that count alone.

Fabio Capello is the best there is and the press, pigs if you like or so called journalists are writing more tosh every day on how England are going to be great again and then when we play a friendly against France we are a bunch of losers not worthy of the shirt. Just like the fans journalists are a very fickle bunch who dont know when to heap praise or scorn, they all basically bay with the crowd if we lose and jump up and down if we win.

England will improve but not yet, these are very early days trying to learn the Italian way of not losing but Fabio will get it right so get behind the England team as we try and get it right for the World Cup in 2010. smileysmileysmiley

Hey I'm no fan of Wes Brown but he has been fairly solid at RB for United this season and gets forward too - I think it was him who set up Ronaldo's goal in the CL final. Anyway, personal criticism or not, it is still your opinion and it's a bit bush-league for a sports writer to claim that his opinion is a statement of fact. Leave that sillyness for the messageboards.
