Toshack

International Wales

comment on the article

Another article from me on Welsh international football.
I'm wondering why John Toshack is still manager?
Didn't come close to qualifying for Euro '08, and Wales are losing out on four decent players in Robbie Savage, Danny Collins, John Oster and Ben Thatcher.
These four players would add experience and strength to the squad and they're missing out because Toshack has argued or left them out of the squad.
I respect Wales as you've seen from my past articles and want them to do well, I can't see this happening under Toshack.
I think Chris Coleman would have been an ideal choice, you may disagree all you like, this is my opinion.

p.s well done tonight!

yeah 17 years ago, i think the game has changed a bit since then, the last comp he won was hardly the greatest in the world. weak team and weak manager, he will leave soon enough, if somebody wants him??????????

pizzdofwidie you come on to Welsh articles and slate off a manager who is trying to build a team for the future yet with the best 'So Called' manager in the world you lose to France and play like a bunch of women without passion. We don't pretend to be a world force, we don't pretend to have the worlds best manager and we don't pretend to be better than anyone else. We don't think we are going to win the next world cup and we don't pretend we have the worlds best players. Why don't you keep your uninformed opinions to yourself and find something positive (if you can) to talk on England threads.

17 years ago Alex Ferguson won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Manchester United. What's your point exactly??

There seems to be a consensus from the English contingent on this thread that Wales fans suddenly see their team as World beaters. I haven't seen a single post in this article which backs up that claim.

The quote "Wales will be very, very close to qualification" demonstrates the realistic expectation inherent in Wales fans, something which England fans are sadly lacking. There's no bullishness here; there's simply a quiet confidence that we finally have a team for the future, and as the quote above proves qualification would be a bonus rather than a necessity.

Luxembourg was a nothing game which frankly I feel Wales could have done without but, as touched upon before, the comfortable 3-0 victory over Norway earlier this year bodes well. Personally I feel that these England fans should be looking at their own inadequacies and delusions rather than deriding our humble nation.

Thanks.

Guys, we should obviously be very flattered that you want to come and comment on a Welsh thread. Goes to show how desperatley bad the English footie scene at international level is I suppose.
I just wish you boys could get your facts right first, otherwise it does get tedious for the adults to have to correct you.
Toshack's man-management style might not suit everyone, but when it comes to sorting out big egos who are ruining squad development, he's the man. Real Madrid practically begged him to return to sort out their dressing room. Which he did and created the team that one the CL in 2000. The reason he left the Wales job first time round was because he found out the truth about the rubbish contract the Welsh FA had offered Terry Yorath (the last decent Welsh manager....not Sparky) after he got them within a crossbar of the 1994 World Cup finals. Toshack felt compromised by the Welsh FA and left.
The reason he hasn't managed in the PL is because the only job he wanted was Liverpool and the only time he was offered that job was before Houllier came in. Given his experience with the Welsh job, Toshack did not want to come in and be the excuse Liverpool used for getting rid if Roy Evans. He would have happily worked with Evans (as he is proving now) but not in the joint manager role.
By the way, none of us are under any illusion that a 2-0 win in Luxembourg makes us world beaters. The FACT is we did it (at a stroll)with a very weakened team containing many lower league players. The last time England played Lux away, was a qualifier in 1998 that you won 3-0 with a full team of Premiership players!!!
Do you feel so smug now, Toshack might not be the top of any clubs shopping list but the English FA consulted him about who they should appoint.
biggrin

All thes people who say it was only luxemburg, the netherlands only just about beat them 1-0. so credi where credits due. you can only beat the team you play. my thinking is its better to beat Lux 2-0 than to lose 1-0 to france anyday.

Steady on lads, if you read my first comments i said he was doing a good job with a limited team, however i have never rated him as a manager, to me i think he looks for trouble rather the players looking for it, he will leave soon enough and i dare say unless fulham come calling he wont get in the prem, he is too far gone to manage top flight football,

well i just like to think johns had ago, hasnt been great but done ok with what he's got... why not give the job to dean saunders ask toshack to go upstairs as such. young guys are playing and a younger manager who has played for a number of clubs round europe and is well respected on and off the pitch could help the team move on to the next level.

Adsmajgic I appreciate the thoughts on Saunders but he just hasn't got the experience yet. At the moment I think its great that he's been included in the backroom team.
Ultimately, I do believe that Toshack and the Welsh FA have a plan of handing the reigns onto Chris Coleman. I think it's great that he's back in the and hopefully he can do a great job at Coventry and bring some of our players there to give them regular footie. I've just read that he is interested in taking Freddy E in the summer. Lets hope he takes Cotteril and a few of the other fringe players and keeps on the good work that Tosh does with them. cool
