Why are the Chelsea fans so bitter that Rio has been given the opportunity to wear the armband? Surely they can see that in recent years he has matured as a player and a person, and in addition has a pretty good disciplinary record in comparison to John Terry. No one can fault Terry's application and dedication, but why does he think that he has to be 'the enforcer' all the time?

Perhaps the reason why Ferdinand knuckled down and applied himself in the right manner can be attributed to having a 'stand no nonsense' manager in Sir Alex Ferguson. Whereas, John Terry had a couple of seasons under Jose Mourinho's guidance and unfortunately his behaviour on the pitch was questionable and was never checked by the manager as it appeared that as long as the team were winning then anything was acceptable.

Capello is a winner and he will transform the England set-up and especially how the team plays. I would like to think that he will give Rio and John Terry the brief to bring the ball out from defence and for the team to play from the back and stop by-passing the midfield with the ball 'hoofed' up to a lone striker.

I also hope Fabio sees sense to bring in Dean Ashton to play with Wayne Rooney in the not too distant future - the days of two short strikers are numbered.

Honors like this can change a persons outlook not just on football but on life and the kind of person he wants to be both on and off the pitch. I'm rooting for him - I hope he does well.

Its only football not Oprah!!! If being captain is enough to change your outlook on life then you're a pretty pathetic individual who i wouldn't want leading my team!

As for who the Captain is..I don't care as long as England win.

I think Joey Barton should be picked and made Captain....

I think this is the right choice, especially as there only seem to be 3 candidates. People seem to think Terry is an automatic first choice, but the fact that his character and on pitch behaviour have been constantly called into question, and the fact that Woodgate and King are better centre halves than him means he is not suitable for the job. In the wake of what is going on at the moment, appointing a captain who moans, cheats and harrasses officials constantly would hardly be a bright idea. I would not be suprised if he was to lose his automatic selection he has held under previous managers, whihc if Woodgate can stay fit shoulod surely happen.

paulchelseafan, were you one of the people at stamford bridge chanting "you don't know what you're doing"?

I don't think Capello's gonna be too worried the master tacticians at the bridge are not pleased

Why should this man who has demonstrated a complete disregard to drug tests be the captain.

That was a long time ago, and in the past we've had a reformed alcoholic and drink drive offender wearing the armband.

Get over it.

i dont what ur all on about, John Terry is the best all round defender in the premiership
-----------------------
lolololololololololololll

instead of being a fool whoever posted this lets look at john teryy...
granted he can get good blocks in and he's strong in the air (altho a lot of the time he blocks with his hands but he gets away with it coz hes "brave" john terry)

he's very slow...
he's a cheat...
he brings the game into disrepute by havin a go at the refs than has the cheek to publicly support the ref respect initiative.. hypocrite..

with the ball at his feet he can make a clearance, and he's not that great a tackler...

also this idea that being injury prone makes him a "hard man" dont be silly...

i cant see how anyone could call him the best all round defender in the premierhsip i can name so many others better than him...

ferdinand, vidic, toure, carvalho! (gd defender), king, woodgate, dunne...
i would select all of them ahead of john terry

If Rooney and Gerrard can't work up front (and it should be given more time of course,) then surely either Gerrard or Lampard will have to be sacrificed?

It's always been blindingly obvious to me that Rooney plays too deep for England, and therefore is useless as a striking force, simply because the England midfield has been terrible for I don't know how long.

Zero midfielders running with the ball at opposition defenders. The only time England have looked like a capable team in recent years was when they had Heskey to win all the hopeful long balls, enabling the OAP-like midfielders to join in the attack!

Sad but true sadface
