Mark Webber column

Formula One
by Andrew Benson (U1647787) 25 March 2008
comment on the article

In his latest column for BBC Sport, Red Bull driver Mark Webber talks about the first two races of the Formula One season.

The Australian describes his battles with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso on his way to seventh place in the Malaysian Grand Prix and his team's problems with fragile front suspension.

And he gives his thoughts on the row over Lewis Hamilton's decision not to become a member of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, as well as answering some of your questions.

Read the column news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/mot... and let us know what you think - and if you have a question for Mark, you can ask it here and we will choose the best to put to him for a future column.

Mark - a lot of speculation around Massa's position at Ferrari, and the mistakes he has made in the first couple of races this year, but watching the race on Speed TV in the U.S., as he was spinning off in Malaysia, there appeared to be a cloud of dark colored dust around one of his front wheels - similar to your disc failure in Australia - but none of the commentators mentioned it. As Ferrari has never been very open about equipment failures, do you think Massa could be taking the heat unfairly for something Ferrari don't want to own-up to, after their unreliability/team mistakes in Australia and the start of Malaysia week-end?

Mark, just had to start off by saying I love your column - so refreshingly down-to-earth and honest. Great job mate!

Now, my question. I actually have two.

First, how well do you and David Coulthard get on? Do you see each other socially or are you just content with seeing each other at the track?

Secondly, do you truly believe you could have won the race in Fuji last year? (Sorry to bring this up, I'm sure you're trying to forget it!) I know for sure that a lot of your fans (me included) were convinced you could easily get by Hamilton after the SC period and win.

To reply to the question 'how much do GP2 drivers earn' the answer is nothing. In single seaters, drivers don't earn anything till F1, and even then, they might not directly have a salary. It is up to the driver to raise the cash required to race in GP2 which can be around £2million per season, although some teams may offer some degree of discount if they already have a title sponsor.

Hi Mark im a big fan
The team said at the start of the year 2007 that you (Redbull) had the most improvement out of any other team on the grid.
What is it like this year.

Hi Arosa Mike, thanks for that answer - I've posted the question a few times but nobody knew anything.

Question?

Why do formula 1 cars have a hole at the tip of the nose of the car?

Thank

Question,

How do yourself and David Coultard kill time in between races? Do you talk often when not racing or even during the weekends?

Hello, I have a question for Mark but I might have missed the boat, it is this..

Are you looking forward to the new KERS recovery systems to be introduced to F1 in 2009? How do you think they will affect racing for you?

Thanks ok
