Colin Montgomerie

comment on the article

Some player in my books but I think the chances of him winning a major have all but gone. Do you think he could still make a good contribution playing in the next Ryder Cup side or would you prefer him on the sidelines advising and motivating?

I'm gonna see this as a good omen. Last time Monty did not make the Masters he had a remaining good year and won the order of merit!!
45 is not to old to win a major and I believe we will see some Monty magic this year at the British Open. Monty still has at least one major in him and lets not forgot he has won two high class tournaments from last July.

I have a feeling Colin Montgomerie's name will be on The Briish open Trophy 2008!!!!

I agree with your statement about Monty's great record and his order of merit achievements. I however still think that he is capable of winning a major. His best chance will be at the British in the next 2 to 3 years It will probably be too difficult in America as he has never once won on US soil. If his putting could just click for one week he has a great chance on any British Open layout. He seems to putt so badly week in and week out. He's also lost some distance off the tee. These guys that think one major is better than 10 order of merits are smoking some good stuff. Tell that to Ian Baker Finch or Todd Hamilton or any other one time wonders.

Thats A good point Alenluka, Monty is a household name and will always be remembered major or not.

I don't think Monty ever could hit the ball miles (especially after trying to use the Ben Hogan clubs) He would hit the ball 280 odd yards average off the tee and used his strength in iron play.

As you said if Monty can click with the putting he has every chance of winning a major

two things to add

1. Monty's score would have been alot better at doral if he didnt keep missing 6ft birdie putts and 2. David Dural is another one time wonder lol!!!

Monty -- Great Ryder Cup player, but other than that a deer in the headlights when he plays here in the states or in any major. His big chance was when he had the island of manhattan left of the pin on his final hole in the US Open at Winged foot and what does he do from 170 yards out? Dumps it short right. His grumpy attitude doesn't help much either.

Ah, the attitude... in cricket, David Gower was relaxed at all times and got told he clearly didn't take things seriously enough. In golf, Monty throws a wobbler when he plays badly and he's told to lighten up. Pleasing the general public is impossible.

He will never win a Major but he's poroven he's a top quality golfer. Of the generation following Monty, which one of them will win Majors, win Orders of Merit or have a Tyder Cup record to come close to Monty's?

if woods had been willing
to play 2 or 3 extra tournaments a year in europe ,,,he would have had more euro orders of merit than monty

I've met colin Montgomerie twice now, the first time his face was tripping him the second time he actually had a go at me while i was serving him in a bothy full of free food for the players at dunhill. He's an arrogant grumpy old man. It serves him right he's been overlooked. he can go do a running jump. Give up and retire Colin, nobody wants to watch fat old men.

his tour card should be taken away. He has no right for saying who should and who shouldnt play in a tournament. If he cant perform he should go practice and get his head sorted out.

Everyone, including Monty, has an automatic way of playing, that is to be one of the top 50. Monty unfortunately has failed. If your are outside the top 50 then the tournament organisers obviously use other criteria and no one can complain.
