Do we treat our referees fairly?

comment on the article

The announcement of the FA's plans to plough £200m into grassroots football in England under its new five-year National Game Strategy can only be good news, you would think.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

But it came alongside a worrying revelation - almost one third of games at the lower level are played without a referee.

The continuing aims of the investment are to get more people playing the game, to enhance facilities and to invest more money in skills and coaching.

However, a statement on the FA's website revealed a "critically high number of referees" drop out every season.

One of the major reasons cited is the abuse levelled at them.

As someone who has played Sunday league football, I’ve seen my fair share of backchat towards referees – and let’s be honest, the conduct of some of the game’s senior professionals towards officials at the highest level hardly sets the best example.

But is the situation really that dire? Have you been involved in games played without officials? How has this affected the match? And what about your views on the treatment of referees at the grassroots level?

The FA have also pledged to "provide a high-quality coaching environment for every player - whatever their age or ability" - lofty aims or realistic goals?

Let us know your thoughts on these issues - and their importance both at grassroots level and the national level.

"Anyone called football, "soccer", clearly is not that into it and lacks a view capable of being taken seriously.

Stick to basketball and baseball etc.
You dont see me on American Football forums."

And which view do you have a problem with? My guess is that I have a little more knowledge, training and experience refereeing than you ever will.

As for American football boards, I don't go there either! smiley

So now you need to be a referee to comment on what is and is not acceptable? It's quite the opposite. Neither referees nor players should be the ones to decide. It should be the bodies in charge influenced by the paying public who love the game.

In response to one of your lame comments yesterday, I've been to more games than you've had hot dinners so don't try me there.

You same to suffer the same as most americans in that you have an overwhelming view that your opinion is more worthwhile than others and that you are superior. Lame.

I think footballers are just plain stupid to harass the referee. The referee will never change his decision, and players are just as likely to antagonise a referee as to influence subsequent decisions in their favour. Players are frequently booked or sent off for referee abuse so where is the profit for them.
sadly some of the most stupid of all players are at the highest level of the game setting a poor example to players below them.
The FA must take a lead and try to educate players, managers, and all involved in the game, of the wisdom of respecting referees, and make the game much more enjoyable for all.

Care to quote me where I state anything like that? Actually, you are the one who has put on the air of superiority. Too tough to take that someone living in America MAY be more knowledgable about "your game" than you?

Grow up and debate the issues if you are able.

I was out of the country & missed this Roy Keane contribution to 'respect' on the field of play.
Pot-calling-kettle-black is putting it ever so politely in response to this so-called man's colossal hypocrisy!
Spitting, swearing, physically damaging other players & leading mass protests at officials!
ANY OF IT RING A BELL YOU DISGRACE TO FOOTBALL MUPPET!?

I have my referees course this saturday/sunday and am interested to see exactly how bad it can get!

I played in the Sunday league for nearly 10 years and have seem a few extreme situations; most brought on by the ref himself!

From what i read, it sounds as though kids football is the biggest problem; an area i'm not interested in. I'm going to try to go straight into mens football.

Also thinking of videoing my progress, warts and all, making some sort of documentary. If anyone has any contacts let me know. Cheers!

I packed in football 10 years ago after playing for the best part of twenty years. I do think that the local league referees were better back then as they had been brought up with an amount of discipline. Even back then there was some corruption as footballing towns would have referees from that area who would blatantly cheat by sending players off and concocting a storey in their report to the league. With the lack of discipline and respect people have for each other these days I can't see it getting any better.
