CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER

Premier League Bolton Wanderers
comment on the article

I am pleased to see at last some realism creeping into the comments made by supporters. They reflect what I was saying weeks ago, when I looked at the way we were playing and the fixture list ahead and got very gloomy. We cannot any longer beat another struggling team that plays most of the match with only 10 men. I never did believe we could beat Wigan even after having rested many of our top players last Thursday. That was a dreadful management decision last week to put out the team that we did. We now have the worst of both results. We get knocked out of the UEFA cup, something this time last year we were going all out to qualify for, then because of this the team plays with its head down and we lose to Wigan. In companies I have worked for, the manager who made such a bad strategic decision would be thrown out instantly. The few optimists left might look at the games played and say that we have a match in hand over some other relegation threatened teams, but that match is at OLD TRAFFORD! Where to now? We are not going to win against the top teams and we have enough of those left to play. We are also unlikely to pick up 3 points on any away match because we play even worse away than at home. We will probably not get many points from other struggling teams because they are playing with a determination we can only dream about. Most of these clubs have better players or better managers or both. The only match that I believe we can get 3 points from is at home to Sunderland on 3rd May, because Sunderland has an even worse away record than us. But this will not be enough to escape relegation.
I believe Wigan won today because they appointed a Premiership manager earlier in the season. We set our sights lower.
There is a very famous computer game called Championship Manager, which is exactly what we have got.

I wasn't too happy when GM was appointed and said so on here.

However, I decided to shelve my reservations and give him a chance.

Subsequently his apparent lack of tactical nouse resulted in my posting an article entitled "GM; an open letter".

In it I appealed to him to prove me wrong and start to demostrate that he had the pre-requisites necessary to manage a Premier League football club.

Despite some improved defensive performances, I remain deeply unimpressed.

Until recently (actually, about 4pm today) I have continued to cautiously resist the temptation to demand his sacking.

Having just watched his comments after the game, wherein he glibly stated that the second half performance was significantly better than the first, and appeared to be trying to deflect all of the blame onto the players, I am left with an uneasy feeling that he's well out of his depth and he knows it.

Enough is enough.

Don't sack him now. Stick with the lesser of two evils (any sort of manager rather than none) and hope we stay up, then ship him out at the end of the season.

As for a replacement, I've said this on another thread; Bruce Rioch.

There'll be six teams (Reading, Newcastle, Birmingham, Bolton, Fulham, Derby), in my opinion, that won't get 40 points this season. It'll be very close and I agree it doesn't look good for us.

It could come down to goal difference...we must not ship in a bagfull at Old trafford.

Unfortunately I can see a rout.

Unlike when we were in relegation scraps a few years ago when we showed real grit, determination and the desire to grind out results we now seem like the teams that were then around us.

Clueless, without sound leadership and direction, tactically naive, and worst of all they look like they have given up.

Maybe one or two have an eye on where they can go next season and have their agents under orders to start sniffing around!

Our defence has been playing well. Look at the goals we have let in against Portsmouth (bad refereeing), Blackburn (2 penalties one should never have been given and Raziak's goal ruled out even though he was passed the ball backwards and it would have given us the lead. instead we had to chase the game). Liverpool; the Jussi own goal and the shot off the post that went straight to the Liverpool forward. Again we had to chase the game
