Reverse F1 grids - Williams boss

Formula One
comment on the article

A radical idea to improve the spectacle of Formula One and make overtaking easier has been proposed by Williams team co-owner Patrick Head.

The veteran said races can be boring and wants the fastest cars to start at the back and the slowest at the front.

"I would like to see the grids in reverse order of championship position," Head told BBC Sport.

"It's the same for everybody, and over a whole season the right guy would still win the championship."

the only sure fire way of bringing excitement to F1 is to have sprinklers watering parts of the track.

better idea...the qualifications are done as now, then places are pulled out of a hat (or helmet) by a driver. Then Ferraris MIGHT be up front, mid field OR at the back....It would then make it more interesting for the strategists......And the first corner!!

there seems to be some confusion here over grid starting position, with some people suggesting cars would deliberately go slower in qualifying to achieve a higher grid position...

Surely with this Patrick Head's suggestion, there would be no qualifying...starting position would be based on championship position. This could work because drivers can't purposely perform badly in the championship to go to the front of the grid, because it will mean they have to score 0 points in the championship....and teams or drivers do not want this.

This may be over the top for some teams, so it would be good to split the grid into 3 teams of 7/8 according to championship position, and qualifying would take place between these cars would be a shoot out. i.e position 1-7 in the championship would compete for places 13-20 on the grid, and so forth. This could work....comments please.

This idea would ruin the excitement that is the start of the race. The start of the race is always fast, exciting and fun to see who comes out first after the first corner. If what Head says does happen, in the first corner, you will have 2 Force India, 2 Honda's and 2 Super Aguri's with a huge collison at the front and it will be as slow as hell.

What about setting start positions on results of previous race. Qualifying would allow a move up of grid positions but to a maximum # spots - say 8 or so. Then the quick guys get into the grid center but still need to do some overtaking. So qualifying would still be fun and fast. And the race would be fun as well.

I agree This idea would ruin the excitement that is the start of the race. It would be far better to put a roundabout on the first bend, this would enable cars to go left or right and be a great place for cars to overtake during the race, imagine two cars neck and neck sling shotting round eitherside at 100+ mph what spectical that would be,the fastest car taking the driving line. This would in my veiw stop slower cars from holding the quicker one`s behind,

Or throw the idea of that away, put VERY HEAVY fuels on fastest cars such as Ferrari, Renault, McLaren and so on when they are to qualify for the places. And others can be given a very light fuels so that way they all can be very competitive for places.

OR!

Throw the blue flag away and make it harder for Ferrari, McLaren and Renault to overtake when they are about to lapping slower cars.

They are paid to drive, so overtake are part of the driving so make it harder for them.

Gday never never. We used to have that. The final race of the day. Nick named the Butchers Picnic. Gave one of your helpers or some one that wanted to buy your car. The slow cars up frount never saw a quicker car behind them. Re the name Butchers Picnic. LateBraker.

I still think that a fair way would be a spinning driver penalty.

At the start of the race (and at every pit-stop) each driver would have to jump out of their car and spin around on the spot, once for each drivers' point they had accumulated.

That way, the drivers with the least points (or no points) would get away quicker and not spend so long in the pits.

Additionally, those with lots of points (and therefore, lots of spinning on the spot) would take longer and also be a bit dizzy for the first few laps.
