The Cup runneth over

FA Cup

Derek 'Robbo' Robson

What a weekend. I'm still suffering.

First of all the bad stuff...

I shouldn't have watched England play rugger again, but I did. If that wasn't the second worst piece of sport this year then I'm a Dutchman (and I'm not, by the way).

They should let the other teams play rugby and leave England and Scotland to have their own tournament called Kicking and Catching.

Every time there's an up 'n' under, that Balshaw bloke looks like a man trying get out of a straitjacket on a bouncy castle. Instead of England-Ireland next week I shall be enjoying a DVD called 'How a Plank Warps'

Then again, the England performance was nowt compared to the misery down at the Riverside, where my team were bloody abject. I walked all the way home furious (and I live eight miles from the ground).

Southgate said the team froze. That's not even the half of it - they displayed all the footballing ability of a bunch of emperor penguins at minus 40. Actually that's unkind to the penguins - I can't see Pogatetz balancing an egg on his feet for all that time, can you? HOPELESS.

At least Gareth accepted his team were cack and that Cardiff deserved it.

Unlike, say the management at Old Trafford. Alex and Carlos. Huffing and puffing like a couple of old steam engines. His knightship is probably James the Red Engine - full of himself and a graceless loser.

Now let's be clear: Martin Atkinson made a duff decision - a big one - in not giving the pen against Distin. After that, I'm not sure what he did wrong, particularly.

Pompey's was a pen. Kusczak had to go and Man U missed more chances than a tee-totaller at a wine-tasting.

But this whingeing and bleating about refs every time the team suffers a reversal is really, really PATHETIC. We expect it from Wenger - let's face it, his teams usually get well leant on, 'cos they 'don't like it up 'em' (as Fergie could tell you with a wee twinkle in his eye).

I hope Barnsley go all the wayDerek 'Robbo' Robson

He picks out Diarra as the worst culprit (doing a hatchet job apparently, unlike say ooo... R. Keane or P. Neville) but the most dangerous tackle involved Rooney's wild flailing studs.

Ronaldo says he was scared to play his game. Crikey. Grow up, son. Most defenders are scared to go near you 'cos you fall over like a wendy house every time they get a foot in.

Take a look at George Best hurdling the scything limbs of some of the nastiest defenders ever to bedevil the game - like Jackie Chan in a room full of machetes - and then get a grip.

When will these flair teams accept that their opposition is not going to stand off and allow themselves to get blown away? It'd be suicide.

The main reason Fergie is upset is because his team LOST. FULL STOP. (The secondary reason might just be to put even more pressure on refs for the rest of the season).

But despite all this hoo-hah, our Cup runneth over. If you can't find a lot to smile about after the best FA Cup quarter-finals in living memory then you haven't got a pulse or you're Alex Ferguson.

The games weren't necessarily the best in terms of quality but it was edge of the seat stuff and the results were outstanding. You can't begrudge any of the semi-finalists.

The only downside is that people are already being congratulated for getting to Wembley. They shouldn't be there yet. It's the semi-finals. Stop trying to milk it for all it's worth, FA!

And if anyone comes up to me and suggests that the Cup is worse this year for the lack of the big four - I say this to you.

DON'T BE SUCH A PILLOCK.

The Cup is back and I hope Barnsley go all the way!!!

i'm a man u fan, and nothing went my way saturday (england not playing rugby didn't help) but i think it's fun that things like this still happen in the fa cup. sure the top four are expected to win, but that would make it far to predictable if it was the case every year, the top four are all doing well in the champions league so i say hurrah for some versatility in the fa.

gently shepherding a player away from your goalkeeper

eh?

distin nearly knocked him into the stands, and never even looked for the ball-stonewall penalty. baros left his leg there to fall over the keeper-card for baros

All Distin did was place himself between the attacker and his goalkeeper - probably preventing a diabolical, studs up challenge on David James.

studs up challenge? how can you know this? are you a mind reader?
how do you know he wasn't going to make sweet, tender love to the calamitous keeper????

you don't know!

barnsley for the cup!

Now that has to be a free kick and at least a booking.

no robbo it was not a penalty, baros takes a dive since you lot still have not got over england getting beating by ronaldo, if that was ronaldo going down like baros you would scream bloody murder and you can take that to the bank.

at the end of the day it was a penalty and thats it keeper v forward and keeper bring down forward its an auto penalty and a red card for the keeper, if you watch the chance you will notice that rooney is the only one that gets to the line anderson runs towards the ball, its still a goal chance and so the keeper needs to see red there is no 2 ways about it. it does seem like he dived and if that the case then its unlucky but i think the keeper was at fault as he reached for the ball with his leg and could not reach so he reached over with his hands which there was no way he was getting the ball which causes baros to clip the keeper and go down. i think it all goes down to an error by the keeper."

Your clearly not reading the situation correctly hence your argument bears literally no weight.

Rooney was on the line, Anderson was closing the attacker down, who was on his weaker foot at an angle to strike the ball. It would have required quite a good finish to beat both players given Andersons defensive qualities along with another presence on the line.

Just for the record, the Keeper bringing down the Striker doesnt automatically mean a red card, I can think of countless times whereby the keeper has been booked or has even gotten away with it - take Kuz against Arsenal last season when he brought down Adebayor in the box, I believe he was only booked on that occassion.

Whatever the score, the game is over now and in the books. I guess you win some and you lose some in terms of bad decisions. We lost that bad decision along with the blatantly penalty not given, lets hope that evens out when we play the scousers next week.

When all is said and done, a truly great team like united should not have to depend on refereeing decisions to secure passage into the semis. When your players convert chances into goals, even suspect officiating does not affect the outcome.
Fighting referees is a lost cause. rather than incur the wrath of the FA with stinging rebukes (whether deserved or not), a much more effective course of action would be to score on all those chances we create.

Gently shepherded away?! Haha biased much?! It was a tough call that one, but it would have been a harsh penalty. Anywhere else on the pitch and it would have been a foul.

As for Baros, that was a bad dive, he certainly made the most of it.

I haven't enjoyed the F.A. Cup so much since the good old days, of scything tackles, muddy pitches and Third Round games going to fifth replays....smiley

I think he is one of the greatest managers of all time, but why can't he ever be gracious in defeat?

-------------------------

but he is, and nearly always as well.

this will explain why he has such an obviously good repor with most of his fellow managers.

the referee not to apply one of the rules in the United Portsmouth match. barging into people off the ball is not legal and is actually dangerous. it is also NOT open to interpretation. Ferguson and Quieroz decided to highlight this fact and one or two other points in their post-match media work.

you may or may not be aware that the United players congratulated the Portsmouth players after the game, that Joe Jordan used to play for United, and that Ferguson and Redknapp are pals.

instead of trotting out banalities you've soaked up via your ABU world, why not just concentrate on your own team, eh.
