F1 poised for classic battle

Formula One
comment on the article

Bernie Ecclestone’s dream has come true – well, mostly, anyway.

Formula One’s canny impresario wanted the three best drivers in the world in the three best teams, and now he has got it.

With world champion Kimi Raikkonen in a Ferrari, the brilliant English prodigy Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren and steely double champion Fernando Alonso in a Renault, all the ingredients seem to be there for a Grand Prix season of impeccable vintage.

There is even the hope that, with the political poison of 2007 largely behind it, the sport can look forward to a year in which the headlines are made by what happens on the track not off it.

Somehow, though, one suspects that is unlikely to happen.

The spy row between McLaren and Ferrari appears to have been put to bed, at least as far as the sport’s authorities are concerned – but the Italian legal authorities are still going about their painstaking processes as they investigate Ferrari’s civil case against their bitter rivals.

Meanwhile, Alonso’s move to Renault removes the possibility of a repeat of the intra-team squabbles that beset his year alongside Hamilton at McLaren.

But it would be surprising if the Spaniard does not want to stick one over his former partner and team, and it is quite possible that, shorn of the restrictions of team responsibility, things might well get a bit tasty between these two given half a chance.

Whether Alonso will get that chance is another matter, for the Renault team he rejoins in 2008 is a long way from the one he left in 2006 on the back of two consecutive titles.

Having carved an intricate partnership with Michelin, Renault were badly affected by the move to Bridgestone as a single tyre supplier last year.

Mistakes and misunderstandings were made in the design of the car, and pre-season testing has suggested Renault have not been able to rectify them all. They may not – it is hard to tell right now – even have been able to get back in front of last year’s third-fastest team, BMW Sauber.

Alonso’s return will boost Renault’s confidence and make the road to recovery far shorter than it might otherwise have been, but not even his stellar talent can close what remains a yawning gap to his former team and Ferrari.

(One of the key sub-plots of 2008, incidentally, will be whether speculation over Alonso moving to Ferrari in 2009 turns out to be true).

Where Renault have been unable to close that gap, it appears so far that no-one else has been able to either.

Lewis knows to beat Kimi he’s going to have to take risks, to push it very, very hard Williams co-owner Patrick Head
And that leaves the tantalising prospect of a two-way shoot-out for the title between Raikkonen and Hamilton.

That might lack the intrigue and delicious complexity of last year’s three-way battle, but it has a satisfying purity to it.

Alonso is a more complete driver than Raikkonen – probably than Hamilton, too, for now – but many would see a Hamilton-Raikkonen fight as one between the two out-and-out fastest racing drivers in the world.

It is in the midst of exactly this sort of intense personal battle that classic confrontations can be made.

The received wisdom in the F1 paddock is that Ferrari have a potentially decisive edge on race pace, but that McLaren may well be able to challenge and beat them in qualifying, and could again have an edge on reliability.

What most are sure of, though, is that the battle will be long and closely fought – something both men will be aware of and relishing.

Williams co-owner Patrick Head spent some time observing the title contenders at a test at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya last month, and he is relishing the season ahead.

“I watched Lewis out on the track in Barcelona,” Head said, “and you could see he was really wringing the car’s neck.

“It wasn’t a question of going through the motions on a long run – he was really sawing at the wheel, right on the edge.

“He knows to beat Kimi he’s going to have to take risks, to push it very, very hard.”

Head said he rated Raikkonen and Hamilton’s team-mates, Felipe Massa and Heikki Kovalainen as “very quick”, but that in the end “it’ll be between Kimi and Lewis”.

“I’ve got huge regard for Kimi Raikkonen,” Head said. “In a way, he’s actually almost under-rated if you think how many times he almost won the championship with McLaren.

“You’d have to say McLaren exhibited remarkable reliability last year, far better than Ferrari, but you’d have to say in the years like 2003 and 2005 he was let down [by poor reliability].

“Kimi could be a three-time world champion now if McLaren had done a job to the standard they did last year, so I’ve got huge regard for Kimi and I think anybody that beats him is going to have to be very, very good.

“But it’s going to be a piece of paper - circumstance or luck - that will decide between Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen and I couldn’t judge which one it will be.”

That might not be the perfect three-way dogfight Ecclestone dreamed of – but one would imagine even he would be happy with a season like that.

Awesome performance from Nico Rosberg, if he had been in the McLaren this year, he would be challenging for the World Title.

He's had amazing performances out of an oridnary Williams car in the past year.

no, hamilton will not "dominate F1 for a decade." Ardigo and Schumacher at La Conca. http://www.karting1.co.uk/news/?p=140
schumacher's apprentice had Hamilton's number in karting and schumacher is already .5 of the pace. he'll be stepping right into a ferrari and hamilton's time will end.

It was a nervy race, and you could see it all round. Alonso and Raikkonen both looked desperate, at times, but Hamilton drove a flawless race. The BMW has come on in leaps and bounds over the past two years, and is easily going to be competitive, but I still think the Ferrari has the slight edge on the McLaren in terms of speed. The two debutants will be happy to have picked up points, although I suspect disappointed at not having finished the race, whilst Heidfeld and Rosberg can be equally proud of their good, calm performance. The best start for Hamilton, who will be looking to build on his lead going into Malaysia next week.

I also reckon that the Ferrari looks fast. makes me hopeful of a very competitive season 'cos speed isn't everything. Handling, "drivability" (if thats a word but you know what I mean), fuel consumption, tires and braking performance are also important. Perhaps Ferrari have a better range on a full tank than Mclaren. i reckon that handling and "drivability" got to Mclaren. brakes and tires.... who knows.

if Ferrari race flawlessly then i think they'll be unstoppable in the long run, but flawless driving is tantermount to impossible to achieve, especially in a tricky car. There's so many things and people in the mix this season, it's great for the sport. Roll on Malaysia

it's all about hamilton and raikonen this year, no doubt, bmw qill be third easily.

the two main battles will be between ferrari and mclaren, and the most interesting one will be between the second drivers and who can pick up the most points for there team to get the constructors championship.

i reckon the constructors championship will be more interesting this year and it will be btween mclaren and bmw as i don't rate massa that high....

renault were never going to challenge this year and whoever said the would know's nothing.

there has never in the history of formula one been a team go from as bad as renault wer elast year to competing for the championship...

the only reason they were good for those two years was becasue they had a regulator in there engine which, at the time, was unique to renault and helped alonso keep his engine for the next race.

bottomline...the drivers champs is only between raikonen and hamilton this year...and the ferrari seems to be faster...

it doesn't look like you know what you're talking about. can you clarify who the second driver at ferrari is? oh, you mean the guy who's got 3 more points than the first driver?

constructors championship betweeen mclaren and bmw? so you don't reckon ferrari might have an outside chance? i wonder who will score more points out of massa and kovaleinen.....

do you comment on any other sports?
