deperer (U1960100) posted Mar 10, 2008 idowu... im not convinced he can win gold at the olympics. i think it will be a great achievement if he could win any medal. Still doesnt convince me mentally. I think he should set himself a target of going over 17.60 or something like that... because he is very up and down with his jumps. If he beats his target and still comes up with nothing... then the other competitors are too good... but atleast Idowu would not have choked.

Droitrob (U8543613) posted Mar 10, 2008 He's got the monkey off his back. He will medal in Beijing, and if Olsen doesn't come back from injury as good as he was before then it could well be gold. Phillips' set of jumps yesterday were as good as any almost. And it was a world final. That 17.75m looked good, but it left me thinking there is another 20cm's maybe.

shivfan (U2435266) posted Mar 10, 2008 Was Edwards really that bad? Granted, I missed the second jump, when Idowu broke the record, but I caught the end, as Idowu was about to get his gold....

rangeofwarwick (U10291490) posted Mar 11, 2008 The camera panned to a stone faced Edwards at one point during the coverage. He forced a cheesy smile when he realised he was on air. The poor guy was in crisis which is understandable. His colleagues kept on ramming it down his throat too which didn't exactly lighten his mood. Micheal Johnson is going to face the same trauma when Wariner smashes the 400m receord this year. We'll see if the words stick in his throat too. It must be a horrible feeling losing your world/national record.

historyinthemaking (U1952971) posted Mar 12, 2008 Pardon? Horrible when someone breaks your record? I have a press cutting on my office wall - it's a letter of congratulations from Willie Banks to Jonathan Edwards when Banks' world record was finally beaten. Now that is how a true sportsman reacts!

rangeofwarwick (U10291490) posted Mar 12, 2008 What Edwards should do, and should not do is his own business. His reaction to Idowu's jump last weekend amused me. Why should he pretend to be delighted that Idowu has broken his record? The likes of Willie Banks obviously rose above this sort of pettiness. That's why Banks is rightly still held in high esteem.
