Sampras vs Federer, MSG

Roger Federer takes on Pete Sampras in an exhibition match at the Garden today (20.00 ET).

Each dominated their respective generation and are two of the leading candidates to be recognised as the 'GOAT'. Sampras won 14 Grand Slams between 1990-2002 while Roger Federer currently possesses 12.

With Federer on a two-match losing streak and recovering from illness, some may say this shows him having the wrong priorities. However the World No. 1 has responded by claiming this will be good practise ahead of Indian Wells.

Such an exhibition match will only fuel the 'GOAT debates'. Yet playing an exhibition is a very different prospect to playing a competitive tournament.

Let this thus be appreciated for what it is, an exhibition! A chance to see two great champions on the same court, to see Sampras' serve and volley game in action and trade-mark jump overhead smash in an age of predominantly baseline play.

This is also an opportunity to boost the sport's profile in America in a period in which the Europeans are dominating the highest levels of the men's game.

USTA.com will be providing free live streaming of the match.

Highly unlikely that we'll be able to lure the lion out of the undergrowth today....

.... unless someone knows the lioness' mating call.

What is all this rubbish you guys are writing. Clearly none of you have ever played tennis to a professional or highly competitive level (apologies to those of you who have). Obviously Federer is going to be better today. He's fitter, he hits more, he has more match practice. Both of these players have that certain je ne se qui that makes a sportsman better than the rest, for tennis its a combination of skill, fitness and mental strength, and also tactics. It's difficult to judge each of these players styles because they are basically the same. Federer will even admit that he modeled most of his playing style of Sampras's game. The main difference is of course, despite the similarity of their strokes is their tactics. Sampras is a serve and volleyer (or chip and charge of the return), and Federer is generally stays back. Anyway, the point is, is that despite the age gap, this game is still better than just about any pro tennis game you will see today on the pro circuit. It's a testament to sampras at just how good his was, that he is even able to pull 1 victory against federer. Who know who would win while they are both in their prime, but I reckon there would probably be no clear winner, just depending on who on form that day and who is not. For those of you who think its a truly fair match, and that Sampras is in-superior to federer, you're just not seeing the bigger picture, because at this point its just to see if two greats compete. The fact is, is that federer probably will go on in the coming year to break Petes record, but its doesn't mean federer is better than pete. There have been very few truly competitive players for federer other than nadal. During Petes time there were many guys, not just one, who were a threat and who tested pete time and time again, including agassi, becker, etc, etc, etc greats. It's an evolving game, always will be, so we will never no. And... sampras is retired you idiot, whoever wrote that, has been since his last victory in the US open many years ago.
