Has the FA Cup regained its glamour?

FA Cup
comment on the article

The so-called magic of the FA Cup has been mocked by cynics in recent years - those voices are silent after a fantastic and dramatic day of quarter-final action.

Sir Alex Ferguson raged, with some justification, against Manchester United's ill-fortune as they lost to a late Portsmouth sucker punch at Old Trafford.

But even more dramatic events unfolded at Oakwell later as Barnsley delivered a performance of glorious defiance in the best traditions of the competition to beat holders Chelsea.

Those final, dying minutes, with Barnsley camped on the edge of their own penalty area and Chelsea mounting wave after wave of increasingly desperate attacks, provided the answer to anyone who doubts the drama and pedigree of the FA Cup.

Fast forward to Sunday for more of the same, as Championship side Cardiff dominated Middlesbrough at The Riverside from the first until the last minute to earn a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory.

Slowly but surely the giants of the Premier League have fallen by the wayside - and with respect to the alleged 'Big Four', the FA Cup has regained much of its old lustre because of it.

Barnsley's advance to the semi-finals, with other clubs outside the Premier League chasing a place at Wembley as well, gives hope to those who had started to give up on of breaking into the cosy cartel carving up the domestic honours.

The debate will rage about holding semi-finals at Wembley - I think it is an appalling decision - but do not expect Portsmouth, Barnsley, Cardiff or West Brom to be bothered about that.

This competition has regained all of its romance this season, and the games at Old Trafford, Oakwell and The Riverside provided confirmation.

Do you believe the glory days of the FA Cup are back? Or do you feel they never went away?

Send us your thoughts - as well as your tip for who will claim the Cup in this most unpredictable of years.

crazydavela, he may well hate it because Villa have drawn Man U twice in the past two seasons, lost, and Man U have failed to go on and win the damn thing. If I were a Villa fan, I'd be furious!

Being a Pompey fan I am delighted at the result on Saturday. I will even admin to being old enough to remember when the FA cup final day was televised all day, The morning analysis, the Road to Wembley, Cup Final It's a Knockout, on the coaches to Wembley with the teams, the match itself, not to mention Match of the Day in the evening! For me, this is a return to the magic of the FA Cup. Whoever wins it this year will deserve it on merit. Oh, one more thing...PLAY UP POMPEY!! musicalnote

Viewing the FA Cup from here in America, I have to say it's always been my favorite sporting tournament. Year after year it astounds me, and I can't wrap my head around wacthing, say, Chelsea or Arsenal bring their millionaires to play in some small field in Lancashire with 500 fans and three cows in attendance. Barnsley has given me no end of excitement this time around. I watched them against Liverpool and Chelsea with utter astonishment. The Cardiff match wasn't shown here...wish I could have seen it. I am captain of a men's league ice hockey team over here, and right now we are making our own unbelievable run into the playoffs....dead last at mid-season, and tomorrow, we play the final regular season game, and we have a great chance of making it into the playoffs on an 8-game unbeaten run. It was all about belief. So, I take inspiration from the FA Cup and Barnsley and Cardiff, and even Bristol Rovers. I love watching the big four, but this is a whole different brand of excitement, and it's something we just don't have over here. I hope you appreciate what you have over there. It's truly unique.

The Cup gives supporters of clubs outside the so-called 'Big Four'a chance to experience some glory. I truly love it!

Hi, I'm a Chelsea fan and I went to Oakwell on Saturday to see the game. I thought the game that Chelsea played was terrible and Barnsley fully deserved their win. They were more up for it and I felt Avram Grant got it tactially wrong again, like he did against Tottenham in the Carling Cup Final. You should never leave both Drogba and Lampard out, especially for a quarter final and if you are in a crisis during the game, you look to bring on your star players that can change the game, NOT the likes of Pizzaro and Kalou. But who would of backed both the favourites Man Utd and Chelsea to be knocked out on the same day? I certainly thought it wasn't going to happen.

This still shows for me why the FA Cup is one of the greatest competitions in the world. It now gives the other four clubs Portsmouth, Cardiff City, Barnsley and West Brom not only a chance to experience the atmospehere of Wembley but a great chance to win the competition for the first time in many years. Even though I'm bitterly disappointed about being knocked out of the cup, I think it shows that anyone, when the play at their very best can the FA Cup.

I'd like to thank TNeile for his comments about the cup. It is the best domestic cup in the world and this year's results prove it. I could be accused of bias, given that I am a Bluebird but I have always felt like this and always will. When Chelsea and Man Utd were drawn apart in the 1/4's I really thought we'd see another all Big Four Final. I really hope that football fans across Britain are excited to see which of our teams lifts this year's cup.
