Will English clubs rule in Europe?

European Football
comment on the article

Time and time again we hear claims that the English Premier League is the best in the world.

That may or may not be true - and, indeed, is probably impossible to prove - but the fact that four English clubs are likely to be in the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals sends out a very loud message.

With holders AC Milan and La Liga leaders Real Madrid crashing out this week, the odds are stacked in favour of at least one Premier League team reaching the Moscow final on 21 May.

Manchester United and Lionel Messi-deprived Barcelona are currently joint favourites, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (if they see off Inter Milan next Tuesday) not far behind.

An all-English quarter-final or semi-final could well be on the cards too when the draw for both is made by Uefa on 14 March.

United are desperate to win the European Cup 50 years after the Munich tragedy, while Arsenal's brilliance in Milan on Tuesday suggests Arsene Wenger's young team could go all the way.

And, despite the in-fighting at Anfield - or rather between the United States and Dubai - Liverpool are capable of reaching another final, as are Chelsea, whose owner Roman Abramovich is rumoured to have booked up half of Moscow for the team and the post-final party celebrations.

Add to this the strong showing so far of Everton, Tottenham and Bolton in the Uefa Cup and it begs the question: will English clubs rule in Europe this season?

What do you think?

yianni1066, you've over simplified this. First of all, Geographic location defines whether a club is English or not. I would bet that there a lot of fans of a club that are not English.

Also, the dominance of the big 4 is just that, the Big 4 do well in this competition. They have the money to get whoever the hell they want to get. It however is not a good reflection of the league. Look at the UEFA cup and how the English teams are performing there. Those clubs are somewhat big clubs, but they aren't as gigantic as the Big 4. They are more reflective of the league.

No dont believe the hype. Any educated viewer knows that its not england that are dominating anything just a load of very well paid foreign players in the top 4 clubs running the show sprinkled with a few good english players gerrard, terry, rooney. Thats about it. The premiership outside the top 4 and maybe tottenham and villa and long ball hoofers who resort to hacking down players instead of passing the ball on the deck. Just because the top 4 teams in england dominate the champions league doesnt say anything about english football. they are all run by foreign managers with the majority of foreign players.

The real sign of english dominanace in world football would be the rest of the 18 teams mostly english based players competing on a technical level with the top sides just like the style of football in spain where bottom sides can outplay the top sides. When the bottom sides in the prem play the top sides they just get 11 men behind the ball and hoof the ball up to the big brute up front. Also as a result of this the english team fails time and time again because these players suffer from a terrible lack of tactical knowledge of how to play the game based on what they are taught growing up ie being physical verus having technique and they never learn.

On and COYS, you can beat the 'Dutch' tonight and book a place in the last 8!

One country that may benefit from all this is Spain. They have produced some great players over the years but always failed once they get their national shirt on.
Now with some of their top stars out of their comfort zone in Spain and toughening up over here in the Prem I think we may finally see a different Spain who finally live up to their potential.

At Least Roma can batter the man u fans and the turks can give chelsea a good thrashin as per usual.

So I think that English Clubs will NOT rule Europe - am sure they are fed up getting beat up! But you never know - memories like goldfish most of them - thats why they think they are better than what they actually are!

Spain are like England

They are really good for their respective clubs.

When it comes to performing for their country - they go missing.

Yes i have read your previous post.

Spanish players are doing well in other countries like England Premier League.
Most of it is down to their Managers and also players who speak same language also helps them settle in quickly.

To say Spain will do good in Euro 2008 becos of the spanish players playing in premiership and other countries - is a ridiculous thing to say.

"If Arsenal win it, maybe we should just say well done to him? The only real English team in it are Chelsea, as most of their success is down to that backbone of Joe Cole, Lampard and Terry."
