GB Baseball out of Olympic qualifying

comment on the article

What do you make of the news that Britain's baseball team has been forced to pull out of the final qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games?

The team has been unable to secure the £40,000 it needed to fund the trip to Taiwan after UK Sport refused to help out.

The British Olympic Association tried to secure funding from the International Olympic Committee but because the baseball team had already received some money from the IOC in 2006, they were unable to get any more, and the International Baseball Federation were also unable to help.

British baseball's Bob Fromer has called UK Sport short-sighted for failing to help them out, while UK Sport defended their decision saying they don't have a bottomless pit.

Read more here: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/oly... and let us know what you make of the decision?

£40,000 doesn't seem like a huge amount of money in the grand scheme of things, but it's obviously more than UK Sport have spare - although they did appear to spend £30,000 sending delegates to a conference in Barbados.

It's sad that the players are not even being allowed the chance to earn an spot at the Olympics, but do your sympathies lie with the team or UK Sport?

I agree with the decision made on the basis that this is £40,000 spent on this tournament with no hope of any legacy given the sport being dropped from the Olympic Games in 2012.

Quite rightly they have been removed from the games and the line that a few of their players are in the US trying out for MLB teams shows exactly why it was removed. Olympic sports should have the olympic games as one of the blue ribbon events, if it isn't as important as other events in that sports calendar then it shouldn't be in.

Baseball is payed by more people than several sports that are still in the games.

Domestically GB baseball needs to get its house in order. I played cricket to a decent standard and have written to the two local baseball sides about getting involved and neither of them have even bothered to get back. You can't even access the results of the domestic scene on places as obscure as the 388 page on Ceefax. I'd love baseball to be taken seriously here and would do what it took to promote it, but I think British Baseball needs to take itself seriously off the field as well as on.

RedRedrobin the point was that a few countries tend to dominate sport. NZ do dominate rugby they may not win every World Cup but they are dominant most of the time. Their record over other team over a period of time is second to none (not just losing a vital match in one competition).
Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Germany dominate football.

I am not really a Baseball fan...but I sympathise with the plight of the GB team....if the Government can fund a politicians jolly to some cruddy conference in the Bahamas surely they can fund a team to go to the Olympic qualifying tournament...after all they only need about 1/3 rd of an MP's annual expenses to fund the trip.

I think the funding of british sport needs a whole rethink full stop.

40k to fund a team who might make it to the finals is not a lot of money compared to the money they have invested in other sports

This link shows a breakdown of funding over the last 4 years and it can be seen that other sports have received money in the millions.

However it is the intention of UK sport that they will fund primarily sports where we will win a medal and as such Baseball is unlikely to achieve that aim and therefore have not been funded.
I would like to see this stricter approach applied to all sports including athletics events where we persist in putting in 3 or 4 athletes most of which are unlikely to make the top 3.

Its Just Disappointing. GB Softball Is the Same Completly Self Funded, we Get No Help from anyone. My Parents are Having to pay for me To Compete at European Championships, a Sport Like Football, Its all Paid For.

If a team has earnt the right to a qualifying tournament you can't rule them out of making an Impact in the games. People say that it doesn't matter Baseballs being dropped - thats not the attitude to adopt, try and achieve something in the final games and Baseball & softball may be recognised.
