Hughes would have been a better choice

Premier League Newcastle United

Now even the most blinkered toon army supporter would know that old Kevin was the wrong choice. The poor man having been out of the premiership battle field for so long looked absolutely clueless and lost. You have to feel sorry for the man.

I said all along that Mark Hughes was the best choice for NUFC. He did miracles for Wales and for Blackburn. He build teams which play with spirit and have players who will give their all to the cause. And he knows a thing or two about tactics. Which Kevin himself said himself he had no clue about.

I always laugh when you read comments from the WUMS about how Newcastle aren't a big club! These comments come from people who know nothing about the game and amuse me greatly.

True, Newcastle aren't a big club in the Man Utd, Arsenal, or Liverpool sense, but they can certainly and should certainly be the best of the rest, Chelsea aside.

Yes, we've won nowt for ages. Yes, winning is important. But winning *alone* doesn't make you "a big club" - Nottingham Forest have won 2 European Cups, as many as Man Utd, Juventus, Inter and Barcelona and 2 more than the likes of Arsenal and Roma, yet no one in their right mind would say they are a "bigger club" than any of the above.

Newcastle are the 5th most successful team overall since the premier league began, are the only side to have consistently disrupted the top 4 monopoly, have the 3rd largest stadium in England and one of the largest fanbases in Europe. It is inside the 13 most profitable clubs in Europe on its own merit but to add to that, it has a billionaire owner. It is able to attract and pay the £100k + wages for the likes of Michael Owen and table £23M bids for the likes of Wayne Rooney. That, under anybodies criteria, is a big club! But it is a big club stuttering due to chronic instability and poor decisions made at boardroom level.

Also, Toon fans are badly misjudged by "outsiders" - most fans I speak to aren't deluded about getting CL places and FA Cup wins, they just want decent football and top 6-8 finishes, which when you consider Everton that salary cap at around £30k or whatever it is and challenging for 4th, isn't unreasonable given Newcastle's greater potential.

NHighfields no Newcastle fan has ever called KK the messiah. Thats come form southern biased media nationals who for some reason best known to them dislike NUFC.

Maybe they support a little club

As a blackburn fan at the game on saturday, newcastle were o.k. They created chances and deserved a draw.

Low on confidence, but they should survive. Better than Bolton, Reading at least.

Problem at Newcastle is expectation. They are a profitable club (just ask Freddy Shepherd!) but say they are a big club who should be in top 6 by right is a load of cobblers.

Seems to me that Shepherd ran the club astutely- often going above manager's heads to throw in a big name signing to keep the fans happy.

Newcastle need 1-2 seasons to put down foundations for success.

You have to ask who would go there if Keegan went. Any promising manager would surely swerve it- risk of reputation being destroyed and sacked within 6 months just makes it not worthwhile.

I find it hard to comprehend that a fellow toon army member can question the appointment of Mr Keegan.. I mean what is it that we really want?? I am not alone when I say to be entertained..that is why we pay £35+ each week to support our team. Hughes if appointed would have been the wrong man. He is a manager of a small club with low expectations which would be no preparation on how to deal with the passion of us Geordie's. Keegan understands what we want he is one of us and is one of the most passionate managers ever to grace the game. What we really want is passionate players gifted players who Keegan can get the best out of. I am not a fan of Mr Mort or Ashley..they didn't give big Sam the cash injection to bring in the best. He was short changed. They seem to be holding on tight to the purse strings. Mr Ashley is a astute businessman and I can see that he is making Newcastle utd into sports world empire. The appointment of Mr Wise does not make sense at all. It looks like a boys club, a club of people that don't have a clue how to run a football club. I for one will be awaiting the end of the season to see if I was right all along and see that they will not finance what we the supporters want and deserve to see each week..top class players!

The Premiership this season has a lot of poor performing sides and that should be just enough to keep Newcastle afloat.
What is now important is what happens in the closed season, when purchases can be made and a team formed.
Only after that can you say how poor or well kevin has been.
What is a shame is other managers have not been given this time.

Rover the Moon

You've missed the crux of the point I was making here. My statement, based on fact if you wish to look it up was:

"Newcastle are the 5th most successful team overall since the premier league began."

This was about success in the *Premiership*. Success in the League Cup or the FA Cup for that matter has absolutely nothing to do with the premiership!

All the fans quoting that Newcastle are the 5th most successful club since the Premiership began conveniently forget that under Keegan's last reign, the club had rediculous amounts of money thrown at it. That's no reason to congratulate yourselves. Blackburn won the title by splashing the cash. So what?. It's that failure to win, despite vast injections of cash along with the failure to establish any form of youth developement system that created first teamers that people laugh at. The definition of being a big club is being consistently strong over many, many years. Not just having a big ground built for you.
