The Bell Report on Ski Sunday - part seven

comment on the article

Hi everyone, here's what's coming up on Ski Sunday this week (2 March, 1900-2000, BBC Two and BBC Sport website) and all the latest news from the slopes.

Celebrity challenge
Former 110m hurdles world record holder Colin Jackson was the latest celebrity to take on our skiing challenge.

He has only been skiing for four years, but he is incredibly keen and I think he owns 20 skis suits already. I reckon he’s bought a new house to put them all in!

He was so incredibly easy to coach, anything you told him to do he would pretty much do it. During his athletics career he must have spent a long time thinking about his body movements and you can tell when he is skiing it has helped him to reach the level he is at so quickly.

Summer Trek
In the final part of my summer trek we were in Kitzbuhel and climbing the Hannenkahm. Last time I went there in the summer I climbed down it and got chased by a bull!

No danger of that this time round as they have built a golf course there.

We walked through the course, but were shouted at by an irate greenkeeper so we carved a path into the forest.

Further on from Kitzbuhel we moved into the Hochkonig region of Austria.

We met a woman called Heidi who runs a Alm up on the mountain where she has a herd of cows that she milks. She has a man called Pauli working with her who is the cheesemaker and he has invented 'chocolate cheese'. I was unsure at first but it tasted quite nice after a few Schnapps.

We then caught the boat from the Danube up to Vienna and that’s were the trek ended.

Skiing news
World Cup skiing has moved on to Kvitfjell in Norway. It was the Olympic course back in 1994 and it hasn’t changed that much since then. It is still quite a tough course, quite technical but with a lot of jumps and it is certainly a good test.

This weekend will be pretty crucial in the standings. There are two downhill’s to make up for the race that was missed due to bad weather in Val d’Isere earlier in the winter.

It is a huge chance for Bode Miller to extend the lead in the overall World Cup and also to challenge Didier Cuche in the downhill standings as they were less than 100 points apart going into the week's action.

It’s hotting up nicely and it could turn into a very good weekend for Miller.

Don't forget we have extended coverage from Kvitfjell on BBCi straight after the show from 2000 onwards.

Best wishes
Graham

Thank you for finally putting a ski sunday prog on that people want to watch - a long time since it was a topic on conversation after the weekend. Love the format - not everyone is a skiier but doesn't mean cannot appreciate it. Please continue.

Please help! Due to a glitch in my PVR I lost the end of the programme just as Ed & Graham were getting to the end of their 'race'. Can somebody please tell me who won?

Graham got there first, but conceded to Ed when he realised the extent of what he'd gone through. Ed said it was the hardest thing he'd ever done and had a little cry afterwards. Bless.

Yes a great show, I've really enjoyed most of Ski Sunday this season, although I felt Ed's trips had a bit too much time spent off the snow.

It's very sadly ironic that the downhill coverage from Kvitfjell on Sunday featured an item on the race medical team, and even had Graham ask about helicopter evacuation. The safety team member being interviewed said no a helicopter would not be a first resort (although we frequently see helicopters used at races and resorts for bad injuries)...

... and in Sunday's Super-G Austria's Matthias Lanzinger suffered a horrific crash with terrible damage to his left leg. I have heard the Austrian Ski Federation are saying it took 6 hours to get him to a hospital with the correct facilities for his injury, via a commandeered private helicopter from which they had to pull out the back seats to get him transported. Tragically, his left leg is now to be amputated due to prolonged lack of blood supply to his foot, and the implication is the long delay getting him to treatment was a major contributing factor.

I wonder if Graham has any views, given his experience and the recent
item on safety in the show. Obviously direct criticism of any parties would not be appropriate - but are facilities generally adequate? Does the level of medical provision vary greatly at different race venues etc?

Enjoyed the show Ed and Graham - I generally like the new format, thought the earlier shows could have focused less on some of the travel n' trains. I think it is good to show people skiing/boarding outside of the competitions. The Celeb bits are useful for beginners or intermediates picking up tips - how about viewres getting this chance next year. I'd jump at the chance for coaching from a pro skier! Loved the challenge item this week - it's given us an idea when 10 of us go to Espace Killy area next week, thinking of doind a round the area (Tignes/Val dI'sere resorts) challenge one day.... adds a bit of spice to things.

Keep up the good work and hope its back next year!

Totally agree. Joined 606 just so I could cheer on Ed and Graham in the hope they stick with the format for next year. Only bit not so sure about is the celebrity bit but like your idea Yossarian of this being continued but with viewer participation. It is interesting that the format change has faced a bit of ctiticism as in my mind it is nice to see a fresh approach to a ski show to give it that broader appeal. Of course we all wish it was us in Graham and Ed's shoes who wouldn't, but what I get from it is inspiration to go and do it all myself. Unfortunately after 26 years on the slopes this year is my first year off the slopes - family commitments! However, ski sunday keeps me sane. Here's hoping its back next year on our tv screens!

Graham & Ed.
We've been watching the show since the begining and it is such a breath of fresh air to see an Alpine sports show brodcast in this way.
I've read the earlier posts from, i suspect 'older' viewers complaining about not enough Ski coverage being shown. Well tough. As you told them it's live every Sat/Sun on Eurosport and first thing on a Sun morning on C4.
Going a Ski/Board holiday now is not just about staying in the resort. It's about hiking,backcountry/heli-boarding/sking and even taking a day off to trek to local areas and support the Alpine Community. We did this at Mayerhoffen and bought the best sausage and shnapps ever.
I think that the Top Gear format you have brought to Ski Sunday is now the bench mark for future Alpine Productions.
Will series 2 meet our now demanding expectations?
Lets hope so.
Great show Gents. okale

Loved the mini-bus full of challet girls Graham. Sure that was not a plant? winkeye

Pleased to read that the general viewing public are coming round to the fact that the new show format is one of quality. it has everything and makes excellent viewing.must have watched celeb tips at least 3 times each.just back from avoriaz having practiced the poles around body tip.did it look silly?yes, but it helped-cheers graham. think ed has supplied great items throughout, even if he is a snowboarder!cant help thinking though that graham would still have won this weeks challenge....without crying.sorry ed. keep up the good work boys, its been superb.

Just wanted to say that we absolutely love the new Ski Sunday format! Watched the old programme a bit before if it was on, but now it's a weekly must-see for everyone in the household, including my non-skiing mum! We're all looking forward to seeing how the show develops in future, as the combination of travel info, tips, racing and general alpine adventures has us hooked.

Well done guys! biggrin
