Premier League Liverpool

Rafael Benitez has revealed that the permanent transfer of Javier Mascherano could be completed in a matter of hours.
The Liverpool manager said it would be fantastic news for the club in completing the signing of the Argentine international who he believes is one of his most influential players.

"It's nearly done, it's very close, maybe hours" said Benitez. "We have confidence. The player is very pleased and it will be fantastic news for the club.

"I think everybody knows Mascherano is a key player for us. He gives to us balance. When we talk about the position of Gerrard, Mascherano can give him the freedom.

"Also if you want to change we have Xabi Alonso and also Lucas Leiva, so we have now four midfielders with quality. I think it will be one of the best central midfields in the world if you talk about these four players.

"It shows that at least we are progressing and going forward. I think we are going in the right direction in terms of signing the players that we need and the business that we need to do."

This is great news for Liverpool! Mascherano is young and world class. He´s a key player, Gerrard get´s more freedom and plays better alongside him.

Mascherano is a good player in a good side, as he is with Argentina. Unfortunately at Liverpool he does not have such quality around him, so does not make an impact. Those ex-Liverpool players who have seen him week in and week out have constantly said he is vastly over rated. Their experience of playing the game far out weighs the opinion of any Liverpool fan.

We can all gives name, but how about some links to back up what you've just made up??

For example, you mention Mark Lawrenson... well i have heard Lawrenson say that Masch is a good signing for us (contradicts what you say.. strange that?) for the holding position we play in him)

ps. I can supply a link for that...

Why oh Why are these forums always full of Mancs shooting from the hip about something they know NOTHING about.

Carrick...! Better than Mach...? You MUST be having a laugh. That guy just CANNOT tackle. Granted he may be a better passer of the ball (not Masch's strong point) but he's not exactly world class now is he? Heck, he was barely "tottenham class"

Mach's brilliance come in rarely ever allowing someone to get past him. He breaks up attacks, chackles men, makes it very VERY hard for an opposition midfield to get any kind of momentum going.

For this reason comparissons with Carrick/Anderson/Fab etc... are all totally redundant. The only ppl it is FAIR to compare him with are other tackling defensive midfield players. (Makele, Diarra at real, Gattuso etc...)

There is an ENORMOUS SHORTAGE of quality players in this position (as Real realised when they let Makele go... it took 3 years to replace him and Diarra STILL isn't as good).

In light of this I would say Masch is not only the best player we could have got in this position (as clubs don't give these players up easily)... he is probably the best in the world in this role....

I still rate Makele enormously but he is getting on a bit and Mach just keeps getting better and better.

Carrick meanwhile just keeps getting FATTER AND FATTER.

Kaka has been poor all season so it's no great surprise that he played badly yesterday

Last season when he was on top form Mascherano and Hargreaves both did a brilliant job of containing the latter for Bayern Munich.
