Tiger's slow play crusade

comment on the article

Tiger Woods is getting sick and tired of twiddling his thumbs while some of the more "methodical" players on the PGA Tour get on with their rounds.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/gol...

The world number one has criticised slow play on the PGA Tour and called on the authorities to do something about it.

Is Tiger right? What should the PGA Tour do to combat the problem? Or is Tiger throwing his weight around unnecessarily?

Tiger is absolutely right on this. My golfing partner and I regularly t-off before 7:30am in order to avoid slow-players, and it really annoys me when a 4-ball goes out just after us and ends having to let 3 or 4 2-balls through because they are taking so long. I play off 21hc and am playing well enough for this to drop to below 18 over the summer, but, there is nothing worse than being held up by slow play ahead - it totally puts you off your game. I believe most clubs have a max of 3-balls during competition, why not 3-ball max all the time. If the pace is picked up at club level, it will eventually feed through to pro-level.

BTW 3 hours for a round is too quick. There is no way you can enjoy the game at that speed. My partner and I do not hang around and even if we are first out it takes us 3.5hrs min. Would have to be a really short course to do it in 3hrs!!

I'll be honest, I'm not a golfer; neither player nor watcher. It's too boring for me. But here's a suggestion. Why not move the 20 second shot clock from basketball onto the greens. I'd love to see a put as the buzzer sounds for a caddy replacement. -- HOOONNNNNKKKK!!!

Like all Professional sports men and women, they should be aware that they are emulated by all who care to watch televised sports.

Time slots between matches should be looked into! They should be 10 minutes rather than the eight that most of these greedy high priced clubs endorse.

I agree entirely with Jaysbee 1971.I play alot of games with the Seniors section of my club, and slow play is one of my pet hates. Why oh why do some players leave their clubs/trolley in front of the green, when the route to the next green is to the rear of where the're playing. While one is waiting your turn why not move your gear while your playing partners are putting out,it only takes a second to do but overall if done at least 15mins a round will be saved.
Whatever happened to the etiquette of the game, when one of the cardinal rules was"to play without delay",That means don't hold anyone up unduly

I simply can't agree honestDaveblogger. The four ball better ball is the staple diet of most weekend golfers. Why should it be stopped because people don't play quickly enough? The problem isn't with the format but with the slow play, people should speed up and learn etiqutte.

Of course a four ball will let 2 or 3 balls though, as they will be quicker, or should be.

I'd suggest another solution; that the professional should put 2 balls out with each other to make up fourballs, so that those of us who enjoy this classic format, don't have two balls trying to play through all morning.

There is nothing more annoying that trying to get a tee time for our four ball on a sunday morning to reaalise there are no tee times left as 10 2 balls are going out!

Adygolfer,

I have never commented on 606 before, but given your complete lack of respect for people who are learning to play a sport, I thought i might aswell start here.

As for your comment about people who wait for the green to clear before they attempt a shot which they probably wont make, then what is the point in playing unless you have the belief that after enough practice you will hit them?

What do you expect learners / high handicappers to do? stand at the tee and think "i'm probably not going to hit this shot properly so i'll just take it anyway and once i have mis-hit it, at least the pompous idiot behind me will gain 30 seconds on his busy day"? Get a grip.

Perhaps you can check your watch and tap your feet next time you are held up to give the players a sense of urgency?

There is ettiquette on the course, but there are also common manners and unfortunately for everyone at your local club, you seem to be more interested in the first

paulgreen17,
What u said is spot on, well done,
Im a low single digit golfer who plays with a mixed array of players. From county players to total beginners,
Adygolfer's attitude is the reason why people feel intimidated by golf clubs and their members.
I believe that as long as my playing partners are well mannered, polite and apply the correct ettiquette there should not be a problem waiting to play an approach shot they might not make.

Hallelujah Tiger
Ever since the rise in popularity of Golf as a spectator sport, there has been a decrease in the standards of etiquette by those playing the game, particularly in relation to the time taken in playing a round of golf.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and unfortunately Professional Tournament Players are now laying down the standards in behaviour particularly in relation to slow play.
Bring back the 3 hour round. But please Tiger stop spitting.

Slow play is a problem! 1 simple rule that people seem to forget: If the group in front are 1 complete hole ahead of you then you should let the group behind you through asap.
Also if the group in front of you are not 1 complete hole behind the group in front of them then dont start moaning at them about slow play!! Also to the bloke who says he hits it 300+ yards and waits on the Tee for people to finish the hole. If you would only hit the green once out of 100 times then i suggest you take a 3 wood to the middle of the fairway wedge to green then 1 put for birdie and stop slowing up play!!!!
