Show your support for Shearer and Chiles

by Sean C - BBC Sport (U6776929) 26 February 2008
comment on the article

Alan Shearer and Adrian Chiles are cycling from Newcastle to London, in just two days, to raise cash for Sport Relief.

Throw in a pit-stop in West Brom and our boys are looking at 335 Miles in two days.

On the first day alone they are set to cover 186 Miles - which is longer than any single day stage in the Tour de France!

How do you think they will get on?

Send your thoughts and messages of support for the duo here.

And don't forget to show your support in a financial sense by making a donation to Sport Relief www.sportrelief.com/supercyc...

And if you are inspired by Alan and Adrian's actions then why not rise to the challenge yourself?

You can sign up and get sponsored to do one, three or six Miles to raise cash for Sport Relief.

Don't forget to tell us what you are planning to do and send your support to Alan Shearer and Adrian Chiles.

Fantastic achievement! Superb!

So sad that Lineker had to make that "joke" about red light jumpers. Shame he didn't volunteer to join them, it might have been good for his attitude.

Anyway, once again, what a fantastic thing to have done. I hope West Brom win the Cup and Newcastle win someday soon.

Good on you both. I've taken up cycling in a big way and I'm amazed when people think I'm superhuman for cycling a mere 30 miles.

I would love to do a big challenge like this and it's an inspiration.

Who was that Lone Stranger who followed the cavalcade from The Hawthorns to BBC TV Centre?
It was me.
I have only a couple of negative things to say. One – The road pace was a little too fast. Heart rates were elevated above what they could have been and the sweat was flowing more than it should have been. Two – the stops were too long. Blood flow to the muscles slowed down more than should have been allowed. This is why Adrian got cramps.
Other than that, it was a nice day out, despite the drizzly rain between Aylesbury and Amersham.
Oh, another mistake was that each of the seven riders carried 2 kg of water and energy drink ON the bike. They had a support van to pass them any water bottles, so 2 kg could have been reduced significantly. I didn't carry any water bottles, as I was only going the 125 miles between West Brom' and London, and stops were scheduled for every two hours.
For insurance purposes, I had to follow behind the trailing vehicle, the one with the big matrix sign on its roof. I got fed up after 4 hours dodging the paper coffee cups that was being thrown out of the passenger window.
But the most notable observation of the whole day was the dismal number of cyclist who bothered to follow the procession. Alan and Adrian's progress was visible on the website, so it didn't take much thinking to predict the next junction and timing. Was it the drizzle? Was it the Friday afternoon traffic? I don't know.
One other item worthy of a comment, - Adrian is not overweight. I'm overweight, by about a stone, and looked positively rotund standing next to him.
