PGA Tour

US media sites are reporting that the era of Nicklaus duelling with Gary Player is over and that Fred Couples will today be named as US Team Captain for the 2009 matches at San Francisco's Harding Park.

Nick Price for the Internationals? Or IB-F?? Steve Elkington???

Wonder if they'd ever give Greg Norman the chance to say NO?

Wow, I guess they did. (How did Finchem sell that to the Shark? Promise of a return to Royal Melbourne in 2011? But thrilled that he did.)

Couples and Norman President Cup Captains for 2009.

How does this position Feddie for Ryder Cup Captain in 2010? Must be they're dissing him. Corey Pavin perhaps for 2010?

Greg Norman, what a legend!!! I am glad to see him get the captaincy. One of the greatest golfing talents there has ever been. Though he will be remembered for just winning the two British Opens, for me he is undoubtedly one of the ten greatest players of all time. There will always be what ifs in golf, but had Larry Mize not chipped in during the playoff in 1987 Masters, I have no doubt that Norman would have gone on to win many more majors. Before anyone says anything, I am European not Australian so no biase there.

That said the guy still won 88 tournaments which is an incredible achievement and he still holds the record for the lowest aggregate score in British Open history and the lowest ever at the Players Championship (24 under par at sawgrass which will never be matched!)

I for one find it a shame not to see this guy gracing the fairways on a regular basis. Like Ballesteros one of the true greats, if you could have combined Normans long game with seves short game, think of the damage that could have been done.

Glad to see couples get it too, another super player on his day.

There will only ever be one Great White Shark!!!! Also for all his heartbreak at Augusta, he still to this day holds the course record of 63 with Nick Price.

The Shark: The only player to lose all four Majors in play-offs.

Actually not true, craig wood also lost a play off in all four and was actually a very good player.

Though this would be a tough pill to swallow, to get into a playoff in all four majors is an achivement in itself. A lot of good golfers never even make a playoff in a major in their career! shows that he was always there or thereabouts and in the hunt.

Better to have been there and contended (and wont two) than to never have been there at all. This guy has won 88 tournaments and has nothing to prove!

Thanks slasher, You're dead right about Craig Wood. I tend to forget his PGA effort because it was Match Play, but 38 holes is definitely extra. 21 wins, two Majors.

And to think he was only born fifty miles away. From here, not there.
