New England Set-up

Premier League Tottenham Hotspur
comment on the article

If im not mistaken Fabio Capello and his coaches were present at yesterdays carling cup final. Both Chelsea and Tottenham had a lot of England eligable players out there (Chelsea have mostly first team players while tottenham have fringe players). From yesterdays result and some of the individual performances it would not surprise me if there was a bit of a shake up in the england set up.

Robinson - had a decent game overall apart from his positioning for Drogbas goal, made a few great saves in extra time.
Woodgate - inspirational and alert at the back and grabbed himself a goal (albeit slightly flukey), man of the match.
King - Has played only a handful of games since the end of last season but it did not show at all yesterday, brilliant game from the captain. Shame to see him limping a bit at the end could hinder his england chances
Huddlestone - came on as a sub and was solid in both his passing and defensive duties
Lennon - Another good performance and completely outshone Wright-Phillips on the opposite flank
Jenas - Capello is already clearly interested in Jenas and yesterdays performance will have done no harm, played with his both his heart and his head.

On the other hand we have Terry, Bridge, Wright-Phillips, Lampard and Joe Cole for Chelsea, can anyone say anything positive about their performances yesterday except perhaps Joe Cole. Terry was his usual thuggish self and Bridge, Wright-Phillips and Lampard were completely ineffectual.

well from the people who see king play most of the time do you guys agree with me by saying that king would be england captain by now if it werent for all his injuries.

robbo needs to improve alot imo otherwise teams will just smack it from 50 yards and it will go in although it wasnt a bad performance yesterday.

if we had a good england manager (like we do now by the looks of it) yeah he would have been close

i still get annoyed about euro 2004 wasnt it when king played awesome against france and yet was still replaced by terry who had in previous games dont next to nothing for england

Robinson seems to be a better keeper when he doesn't have time to think. He has great reflexes and hands but at set pieces he seems to over think it or not think at all and gets himself in trouble.

If only Ledley King could keep fit - he seems to be an inspiration for Spurs and could be for England.

im a liverpool fan but i think that King and Woody are immense to be honest.
Rio is ok on his day, terry can be good when he isnt moaning? Carragher, getting past it and retired and Lescott isnt quite ready to start..yet! Oh and S.Campbell is past it at International level. So for me King and Woodgate when fit would start together for England as both have good pace for a CB, both good in the air, reading the game(what they are best at) and pure commitment! the guys are class

Agree with a klot of the sentiments here and have been saying so for a while.

King would be a starter if either: 1. He had moved to a top 4 club like Rio did, or (and much better) 2. Spurs were playing in the CL and getting to cup finals etc
Obviously his injuries the last couple years would not have been helpful though.

His perfromance against France was immense - he has always been excellent for England. Terry has not done much and Rio (used to?) be prone to falling asleep.
Woodgate didn't start great against Drogba, but dealt with him better and better as time went on. The only bad thing from England's point of view of King being fully fit would be Dawson playing less!

if King & Woodgate can stay fit, along with Rio & Terry, England have very strong options at centre back

If ledley king was at full fitness all the time he has the ability to be the greatest defender in the world in my opinion.

When i watch him at white hart lane putting in performances like when we beat chelsea last year and sunday against chelsea again he is outstanding.

We dont lose when hes on the pitch and teams are lucky he has been injured in my opinion.

nice to see Ledley getting a bit of recognition for how good he actually is. I feel only a couple of clubs in the prem have a real captain like Ledley is for Spurs, e.g. Gerrard for liverpool. Someone who leads by example by putting in a real passionate performance, it just spawns confidence in a team to have a player like that

One of Jol's biggest downfalls i think was rushing King back from injury too fast last season, if we had started this season with Ledley we would not be in 11th place now.
Ramos has the idea. i just hope King and Woodgate stay fit. they are partnership that will give Rio and Vidic a run for their money

if king is fit he should start for england without question. i think with JT though, not woodgate or ferdinand. If spurs continue to perform together as a squad like they did against chelsea on sunday, all of the players will find themselves more and more in the reckoning for England places. JJ has made a start, robinson will come back once he achieves form, Lennon is better than wright-phillips although W-P does seem to score goals. I also think if Huddlestone continues to improve he is a perfect option to sit in front of the back 4 in a 5 man midfield

i don't want to sound like the entire spurs team should be the 1st choice england squad, but they should be considered for the right game (of course for some matches you would want a scrappier player in midfield, hargreaves or something) etc. but when you have a team with a core of english players it just makes sense to use them. We've seen glimpses of Lennon and Jenas for england, but if they played when King is at the back i think they would feel a lot more comfortable and put in a much better performance, just from the familiarity.

Maybe this way we would see a more gelled England team rather than 11 world class players not communicating with each other and just trying to materialise goals from nothing

Ledley King has always been a great centre back and if it wasn't for his injuries he'd have played many games for England.

Rio has been in great form this season and Woodgate has started to show how he was playing last season for Boro now that he has joined Spurs.

Terry hasn't been at his best for a couple of seasons but don't get me wrong he's still a fantastic centre back with lots of experience. Whether he'll stay England captain is debatable.

Thats 4 centre backs everyone has been mentioning and if you go through the rest of the cover we have for English centre backs in the prem then there's plenty of choice. Only time will tell who Mr Capello's favourites are.

king is are most influential player even more so than berbatov and his injury problems have been heart breaking for tottenham. he is a world class player and if he is fit then deserves a place in the england line up.
i wish him all the best in hi career and i hope it is at spurs. him an woodgate at the back with hutton and bale would be contending for best back four in the premiership.
