You would increase the acceptability of your posts by being less assertive and qualifying what you say as "in my opinion" or some such. Instead you offer opinion as fact, and in some ways uninformed fact!

What you wish to believe about DC is entirely up to you. However your statement that "he was totally blown away" by his team mates is hardly born out by the facts.

It is broadly accepted by those within the sport that had he not moved from Williams (another of the many contractual tangles that Team Willy have had over the years) then he would have had at least one and probably two drivers titles.

"Blown away" implies seriously off the pace of his team mates. The record does not bear that out. He partnered Mikka for five seasons, finished ahead of him in some races every season, and the overall results were DC 2, Mikka 3. DC also finished ahead of MS over more than one season. He also beat Kimi 1 season of 3. Blown away - really?

You may be right that despite being consistently one of the best drivers of his generation DC may be remembered for not taking titles - perhaps a bit like Stirling Moss.

I cannot see Torro Rosso, who are technically not up to RBR, creating too much of an upset. They have two tasty young guns who may well be the longer term replacements for RBRs first team. This year they need to show what they can do.

DC is first and foremost a racer, and whle at RBR has established a record of getting his car home - often ahead of where it has any right to be. He put a secondhand Jaguar on the podium at Monaco two years ago! I cannot see two new young guns concerning him too much.

Please feel free to believe what you want - as will I, but please lets try to avoid the unqualified assertions.

oldboy,

I read this thread late last night (by which time I couldn't respond until today - silly forum rules!!), but having just signed in I see I don't have to post too much since you've said pretty much everything I would have.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A28292277

That was an article I wrote a few months back, and I mentioned that in spite of having been 'blown away' as some people put it - he's in fact beating his team-mate(s) in 6 out of his 13 full seasons (46%), which indicates competitiveness as opposed to being 'blown away'. It just so happens that the seasons the McLaren was capable of competing for the championship (98-00) Mika was in the zone to such an effect that Schumacher wouldn't have beaten Mika in the same car let alone anybody else.

To just continually post literally the same sentences such as xiggly has only demonstrates the subjective opinion - which is fine, everybody is entitled to their opinion - but it does demonstrate a lack of true knowledge of what they are actually talking about.

I too think Coulthard is just an AVERAGE driver. He is not quick but he is consistent. But most importantly he is a good team mate, unlike Lewis and Alonso this year. I feel that LH and DC were at Mclaren last year, then DC would have given LH a good chance of getting the title unlike Alonso. Good team mate is one of the rarest quality to find in a F1 driver, now-a-days. So what if he had just an AVERAGE F1 carrier, he will atleast be remembered as a respectable GENTLEMAN.smileysmiley

i watched DC at mc , from what i can remember , mika hak , and kimi rak, were both in the main quicker than DC ,

again from what i can remember , very rarely did he beat those 2 in a strait fight , unless MH or KR broke down first
i could be wrong on that point , but if he did is was only very rarely ,

as choagy told me last night , he has 13 wins and 500 points , big deal

he is the oldest person in FI , has had many good reliable fast cars ,

this amount of points and wins is nothing special ,for the amount of years he has been in F1 , and the amount of good cars he has had ,

i have nothing whatsoever against DC , but from what i have seen of him over the years ,and i have watched F1 since 1984 ,he is nothing special ,

if he was anygood he would have won at least 1 drivers championship by now , how long has he been in F1 , 13 ,14 years , not absolutly sure ,

his record is nothing fantastic ,

nothing wrong with people who want to fantasize that he is special or a trully great F1 driver ,

just dont expect the rest of us commonsense people to --

Wrong again xiggly - DC is not the oldest driver in F1, which I take to mean the driver with the most starts. That honour goes to Rubens who will set the record for the most GP starts ever if he continues through the coming season.

You dismiss DC's 500 points as irrelevent although only a handful of drivers have ever achieved this. Yes DC did it over a long career - oddly so did most of the others, and a long career at this level in sport is of itself a statement of quality. There is little charity out there and DC did not keep his seat by being a nice guy. He delivered for his teams.

The final part of your post seems just needlessly rude. I respect your right to your views but would ask you accord me the same courtesy. You say you have watched F1 since 1984 - well on the basis of the quality of your recent posts you don't seem to have learned much, either about F1 or about how to communicate your views.

i stand corrected RB is the oldest driver, not that it makes any real difference , DC is still a veteran in F1 any way you wish to slice it,

sorry but again his record is nothing special

his wins came when he had the best car , 12 ,13 wins in what 15 years i think ,
nothing to write home about is it -
didnt mika hakk twice beat him to the WDC at mc ?

sorry ,i did not find the last part of my last post rude ,

if people dont like reading the truth maybe should think twice before they post on 606 ,

some people here disagree with my opinions here on 606 ,
thats fine i dont have a problem with that ,

and i am not of such a delicate nature that i think they are being rude when they do disagree with me ,

that is all just part of the harmless fun debating a F1 point here on 606 --

Xiggly - I have no problem with different opinions, I come here to learn different opinions. However you go beyond opinion.

"if people dont like reading the truth maybe should think twice before they post on 606".

You clearly feel your opinion is "the truth" although it does not accord with the recorded facts. OK but that is then dogma not opinion and no-one is required to accept unsupported dogma.

In your previous post you clearly imply that anyone not accepting your "truth" is lacking in sense. So you essentially believe it is appropriate to call me a fool because I can see flaws in your argument. Well - I am no fool so I do find that offensive. And that is not me taking offence becuase you disagree with me, because that is your right, but rather my objecting to your needless name-calling because I, as is my right, disagree with you, which is no part of "the harmless fun debating a F1 point here on 606".

I start to realise that this debate is probably pointless and that what I am saying may be too subtle for you. Enjoy the coming season and support whoever you wish. Just let the rest of us have the same option!

old boy ,chill out will you ,

how i have offended you , have i been rude to you , have i called you a fool ,or any other silly name ,

you are taking our difference of opinion far to seriously

you think DC is a great F1 driver ,fine ,be my guest you go on beleiving that ,

i dont happen to share that view , he is good ,nothing more ,that is just my opinion ,agree or dont agree , dont really give a rats crap either way -

when DC retires , probally end of 2008 ,F1 history will soon forget him ,because in his 15 yrs or whatever in F1 ,he did NOTHING to be remembered for ,

F1 fans , F1 history ,remembers drivers that have trully done remarkable things in a race car , senna ,prost , clark , fangio ,

DC not even fit to lace these drivers boots , hence beleive me ,he will soon very quickly be forgotten , when he calls it a day --

Xiggly - I'm cool - and happy to agree to disagree, indeed I always was. I certainly won't be losing sleep over the fact that you hold a different opinion to me.

My problem was never what you said but always how you said it. I will just accept that you have a confrontational style - and that possibly you do not see how agressively you come across.
