Ferguson hits out at agents

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hit out at football agents after getting no closer to agreeing a contract extension with Wes Brown.

Brown's agent Paul Martin is understood to have advised him to hold out for more than £50,000 per week.

And Ferguson said: "Players of today live in their agents' pockets - it's a situation which really depresses me."

"Wes has been with us since he was 12 but I don't think that matters these days. Their agents live their lives for them and if you are happy to go along with that then you get the situation that you have got just now."

Is Ferguson right to lambast football agents or are they simply doing their job?

Why do players really care what anyone else earns?

How do they know everyone else's salary anyway?

Think about it really. On Monday morning if my boss called me into his office and said "Right, I've got some news on your salary - Instead of paying you £20,000 a year, from today we'll now being paying you £20,000 a week instead"

However, there is one condition. Everyone else in the entire office, (including the janitor, 16 year old office temp & the woman who cleans out the toilets) will all be being paid £25,000 a week.

If you agree to that, can you sign here. You couldn't get me on his lap with my biro out quick enough. I coudln't give a monkeys what anyone else was earning.

Who in their right mind would say no to that?

John Terry has a clause in his contract to say he has to be the highest paid player at the club.

I don't actually think it's anything at all to do with the money. They probably don't even touch half of it. It's putrely a status thing if it ever got into the papers.

They compete with their cars, houses, their brainless page 3 girlfriends. The salary is no different, just something else to show off about. I hope the fans treat Brown with the disgust that he warrants.

I find it strange that he now critices agents..his own son is an agent , agent to some of his own players. How can he be objective towards players not with his son ?
It all seems somewhat hypocritical to me.

Still not sure why we need agents and the PFA. Get the PFA to negotiate all contracts.

If we are to persist with these vermin in football, nobody should pay agents fees at all - bar the players.

Make it illegal for the club or anybody to pay an agent. If a player wants to use one fine, but make him pay every penny for it from his signing-on-fee / new wage etc.

I did not hear any complaints about agents when he conspired with Roony's agent for him to leave Everton. As usual with football managers Do as I say not as I do

I think Fergie is spot on. Unfortunately, he should have known better, that he has the squad he has mostly because agents hike fees and hold out for the highest bidder.

If it hadn't been for that, then Chelsea, ManU, Liverpool, Arsenal and many other EPL clubs wouldn't have some players with them by now. Brown's agent just realised he could take advantage of ManU and get a preposterous weekly wage request through, and ManU isn't in full control, Fergie hates to look like he's begging. Remember what hwe did to Gabriel? He's only just feeling the heat that comes from the party in control.

Sorry Fergie, you are very right, but you can't have your cake and eat it all at the same time.

Does Fergie himself have an agent - exactly!

When the shoe is on the other foot.
Once Gary Neville retires do you really think Sir Alex will persist with Wes as his right back? Not a chance, he'll splash out £10-15m on someone like Phillip Lahm if one of the Brazilian twins does not make the progress required.
So much for loyalty Sir Alex, you didn't really show any to Phil Neville (a loyal servant who would have stayed all his career if he had the choice), at the end of the day he's doing what he thinks is best for his long-term future in the same way you do in your team selection and transfer agenda.

United are best rid of him imo - very average player, and cannot understand how he still gets picked for England. The fact his club is United probably being the sole reason.

I agree on the fact that agents should be banned from the game. Most footballers are not stupid and should finalise their own deal, they should have assistants at the club who do the paperwork side of it. Some players are worth holding out for and giving a bigger pay rise to, but the squad players that can be replaced shouldn't dare question the club who have been paying for the average talents. I would love to be on £5,000 a week, yet these guys are arguing about £50,000 to £100,000 contracts. Why do they need all that money? No one needs that amount of money to just survive, bring in capping the players wages to an amount I say. Look at the 50's, 60's, 70's when players got what they were given and played for a club they wanted to be part of. Too much greed in football. steam

Agents are greedy parasites.

Wages are nauseatingly obscene ... and for what? Do without football for a week or two, say lying in a hospital ward, and it is all so irrelevant.
