Sharapova takes Qatar title

comment on the article

Well, that was a strange one.

Maria Sharapova dominated the opening set of the final against Vera Zvonareva, much as she has done every other match this year.

Her game then fell to pieces in the second set and she headed for the changover in a bit of a mess.

But a few wise words from on-court coach Michael Joyce - along the lines of 'stay away from her backhand' - apppeared to do the trick.

Sharapova dominated the decider, without ever really hitting top form again, and it was title number two of 2008.

So what was the key to the match - Sharapova's resolve, on-court coaching, Zvonareva's failings? Your thoughts please...

Maria now moves to within 300 points of #2 Ivanovic in the rankings so should be able to launch an assault on that spot over the course of the next few months. She also moves to 550 points ahead in the race at #1 ok

Great tournament win for maria.

It was a very strong draw with ivanovic, kuznetsova, jankovic and venus but none of these made the semis somehow.

I don't think rebound ace is the best surface for maria as the aussie open final 07 showed and she at times struggled on it this week but when others around her fell she came through.

Dubai has an even tougher draw and also maria will have to play 1 more match than the top 4 seeds to win so it will be tough but the good thing on her part is that she has no points to defend this week and she should be #2 by the french as she can still gain points at dubai, iw, miami and the whole clay season.

From the changes in her appearance (do those mouth-foaming contributors here REALLY think she is more than average looking - not that that matters, just surprising...) and even further increased power one may be led to believe that Sharapova is taking something... Any medical specialists willing to comment?

Pimbo

That is a totally unfounded and scurrilous insinuation.

I think by Maria upping the ante. I'm not a huge Sharapova fan but I have to say it is nice to watch her playing so well again. Her match against Henin at AO was stunning - the backhand is just so fluent. Forehand is always going to look as though it's a huge effort to hit it but so effective. I have been amazed, also, in past 2 tournaments by her movement. Very impressive!!
