Ferreira signs new Chelsea deal

Premier League Chelsea
comment on the article

Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira has just signed a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Is this a bit of a surprise Chelsea fans? After all, Ferreira has only played 18 games this season.

No doubting his quality though.

I can understand Chelsea wanting cover, and Ferreira can play very well. He is inconsistent though, and you just hope that Chelsea won't need him when they are in an important game against top class opposition.

He can be very good going forward, but it is his defending against decent wingers that can let him down. Someone should tell him to keep it simple. Simply stop the winger from getting past you and crossing the ball at all costs. Far too often he fails to do that.

Awful awful player. Always gets caught out of position and is nothing special going forward. Makes far too many mistakes and looks out of place in an awesome defence.
I was hoping we'd buy a new right back next season but i can't see it if Grant's planning on keeping F**kupeira and Belletti. Not a great move. Alves woulda been nice!

I don't think he is a great player, but he has been a loyal, reliable and effective member of the most successful Chelsea squads in history. I'm happy for this sort of player to stick around as long as he wants.

His signing for the next five years not withstanging, Chelsea still need a right full back in the likes of Dan Aleves because Feriria is inconsistent and very unreliable at the back.

When I see Ferreira's name on the team sheet, I do worry more then usual. It's not he's a bad player, but to me seems to be the weak link in the Chelsea chain. I was quite surprised to see him sign a long term deal with the Blues, especially as I can't see him really getting into the side apart from Carling Cup games, cause Belletti has the experience and over the past few weeks some decent games it's gonna be hard for Paulo to get in.

How sound is Alves in defence? I've never really seen him play that much.

Ferreira reminds me of Albert Ferrer, another loyal Chelsea servant. Difference is, the latter was perfect for Chelsea at a time when we were beginning to compete for European places. Now we're there, we need someone that extra bit special.

Im glad to see him stay, very versatile, can play RB, CB, LB and Right Wing.

Tho, he plays better at left back than he does at right back for some reason.

Good to see him stay, id thought he would left after jose went, but glad to see hes commited to the club. No doubt avrams sucess has made a few stars realise that Jose was a good manager, but the actually players are top notch aswell.

well played Mr Grant.

We dont need Alves, hes a great player, but not for chelsea.

hes a wing back, and thats something we dont need, as hes too attacking. Imagine Ronaldo/Giggs against Alves? He would get slaughtered down the right.

Belletti and Ferreria are doing a good enough job.

Its left back we need to sort out, Cole is useless, defends like a centre back and plays like a winger, and Bridge is miles better but gets over looked everytime.

He might have lined up at centre back but he isn't any good there as he proved last season at Anfield in the league.
