Mark Selby - Welsh Open Champion 2008

He's beaten fellow Englishman Ronnie O'Sullivan in the final in Newport 9-8, in a closely fought contest which went all the way to the very final frame.

That's Mark's first ranking event title, his second tournament win this season and his place in the current world elite is now assured.

O'Sullivan had led 8-5 at one point, but sheer grit and determination from Selby won it for him.

Roll on the World Championships in Sheffield !!!

Selby has grit, determination, stamina and all the shots.

I thought Ronnie let himself down playing that stupid reverse double which shows him for the flawed genius he is.

All the same it was a great match and Selby used the tactics it took to beat O'Sullivan and deserved to win. He is no Peter Ebdon thats for sure.

I would not like to be 8-5 up against Selby ever. The boy just doesnt give up.

Selby will win the World Championship this year. Rather it was Ronnie though.

Bit of a boggy final in my opinion but that is what happens when fast genius meets slow(er) tactics. Selby got it bang on with his choice of shots. He knows he is not better than Ronnie and never will be. However, his shot selection was pretty good. Mind you, being honest, he did require more than one piece of good luck to win. That said, his attitude and approach is commendable and whilst it is dull to watch, his bank manager will not be complaining. First to 17 frames and Ronnie would have won this easy.

Obviously I dont have Ronnies talent but I share his view that some things are better done quickly and more extravagently. Unfortately for Ronnie, Snooker is maybe not one of these things (unless you are literally gonna clear up every time)

ronniw i without doubt the most naturally gifted player ever and good to watch, howevr he believes his own "moody" hype now and plays on it with the commentators and crowd. I think personally he is making himself look stupid now. But the commentators and fans allow him to do what he wants - i mean if anyone else walked out a match he would be criticised and heckled, but not Ronnie!!!!!!!!!

However, that was the first time i have seen hum ungracious in defeat, and this note writing and mouthing "im bored" i just ou of order.

mark Selby, and i have been aying this since before the world championship final was due to be a good solid player. Good luck to him. And a bit of character is good to see. Saying he is a boring player is from people who don't have a clue about snooker.

Rant over, but finally i believe people are seeing what a petty player Ronnie can be. Which is such a shame.

It's being made out that Ronnie can't deal with slow play, but that's simply not true. Only against Ebdon and now Selby has he not been able to deal with it, he hasn't potted his way to 19 ranking tournament wins. He can play good safety, and I thought that when there was an exchange of a few safety shots O'Sullivan came off best - whereas Selby was maybe leaving inviting shots more often. People in all walks of life can be affected by their moods, not everyone can keep it in check. And lets face it all he said was that Selby was a bit negative - he never said he didn't deserve to win.

O'sullivan is a petulant, disrespectful plum. The sooner he takes his antics off to play pool the better. He is a bad role model for kids and I for one was glad to see Selby win so that O'sullivan showed his true colours (again) and to shut up the moronic "Come on Ronnie" brigade.

ok

of course o,sullivan should say what he thinks!.but to say/hint that selby aint talented, come on ronniedoh!!!!.some players play attacking, some play more defensive, let people play how they want!.the name of the game is not to give your opponent chances,to make it as difficult as possible!.

O'Sullivan (this time) is spot on.
Watching Selby play snooker takes me back to those mind-numbing days of Cliff Thorburn.
sthendry : Absolute drivel. Would you pay to watch a snooker match where "the name of the game is not to give your opponent chances,to make it as difficult as possible!."
If you would, you'll be one of the few in the audience.
The "name of the game" is to put bums on seats - something that Selby is unlikely to either with his Snooker or his jolly japes.
Still, at least the "Jester from Leicester" amuses himself.

what mark did to ronnie shows to all the aspiring young players that you dont have to be the best potter and breakbuilder to compete with the likes of osullivan. if everyone played like ronnie does then sure it would make for very entertaining snooker but there would only ever be one winner in every tournament. what ronnie needs to do is realise that players play a different game than him and learn to adapt. but i throw out a please to all the youg players dont start playing like peter ebdon, as he truly is the most boring player in the world.
