Athletics and wrestling - the comparison

Lord Coe said today that he fears that athletics will become like professional wrestling - fake, riddled with steroids and with nobody caring about it as a sport. And I think he's pretty spot on.

Although I'm not aware at present of any track and field athletes having died as a result of steroid use, it's easy to see a comparison between the two professions. Drug use is rife in both, with the biggest stars able to cover their tracks to make sure their use is undetected. It seems though that more top track stars are being caught, because they're not really earning as much as top wrestlers these days, and therefore they're using doctors and trainers who can be traced. However in wrestling, top stars such as John Cena, Triple H and Batista have long been accused of using steroids, but no-one has been able to prove that they have, with their only accusations being their general size and the fact that all three have suffered muscle injuries, with Triple H having torn two quadricep muscles completely off the bone, first in 2001 and then in 2007.

As for the other knock on wrestling, which is that results are predetermined, well of course that's the truth. And although as far as I know, track and field is still legit, there's still the accusations about fixing races and stuff like that, in a far shadier manner than Vince McMahon simply deciding who wins the title at WrestleMania.

I guess the acid test comes at the Beijing Olympics - how many of the track and field winners there will have their results stand, or have them approved by everyone? At least in wrestling, everyone knows what that is now, and they enjoy it regardless of how many needles are injected.

I think that says it all! Yes these guys do suffer injuries but whether they win or not is pre-determined by the guys who write the wrestling scripts! lol!

If we used harder testing procedures then too many people would be caught and there would be no sport.

there would be plenty of sport - the performance records would just drop - but would be just as exciting if not more with equals competing on a level playing field for once

I'm quite surprised at he depth of feeling against Lord Coe. I personally thought his comments were quite interesting, although I do think there is still quite a distance between Athletics and Wrestling, if only because at the moment people appear to care if athletes are clean, but don't care a jot if wrestlers use steroids or not. He's right to warn though as public perception is very fickle and can change very quickly.

One important thing to remember however is that Coe has to play the political game and speak out on things like this and make the right noises, he is after all trying to manoeuvre himself into position to take over when Rogge retires (and I can think of far worse candidates than Coe).

I agree with white lady. I would much rather watch honest athletic events than see records broken by human lab rats.

why is he trying to compare WWE with atheletics, the two couldnt be further apart. the only thing that is could qualify for a link is that former olympic wrestler kurt angle won gold in 1996. WWE has predetermined outcomes with the previous 'wrestling' pre-planned, its not like they are amateur wrestling.

unless the chinese government or the organisers were choosing who wins and planning all outcomes then i could see a comparison. seems like he is just trying to make a point by using someone like the WWE to get his point across thinking that they don't give a crap bout steroids.

Lord Coe is clearly one of the smartest people in the country, my anxiety at the americanisation of the UK is eased every time I read his interviews.

Well Athletics is already like that. No one believes any sprinter is not taking drugs. They may as well let them all do drugs and least be honest about it. Althetics has no creditibility the way it is now.
