Sorenstam

LPGA Tour
comment on the article

Annika Sorenstam's return to winning ways in Hawaii has kicked off the LPGA season in the best possible fashion.

Not for all the other competitors perhaps, but the Swedish superstar's first victory since 2006 marks what could be the reignition of her rivalry with world number one Lorena Ochoa of Mexico.

The 37-year-old Sorenstam spent much of 2007 struggling with neck and back injuries, allowing Ochoa to usurp her as women's golf's premier player.

No-one likes seeing one of the game's greats struggling with injury, which is something Tiger Woods has yet to really experience, barring a knee problem.

And by her Sorenstam's own admission, she struggled for motivation last year and lost not only her swing but the will to compete.

But Sorenstam's return in the SBS Open, albeit without Ochoa, suggests the LPGA Tour could be in for a stellar year.

Norway's Suzann Pettersen finished 2007 behind Ochoa in the money list and could make it a three-way battle for supremacy, something the men's game would dearly love, given the repeated failure of any of Woods's rivals to make a sustained challenge.

Sorenstam may have also rekindled her enthusiasm to chase her good friend Woods's major haul - she has 10, he has 13 and is eyeing the Grand Slam this season.

But with the Women's British Open, the last of the year's four majors, ending on 3 August, Sorenstam could well achieve the Grand Slam first. And she would probably see that as a rather nice coup.

She'll need to stay fit, of course, but however it shapes up, Sorenstam's return can only be good for the game.

Glad she's back and winning again. The woman's game has been very quiet without her

Great for Sorenstam.

But: No young Europeans in the mix.

And: Think you're getting ahead of yourself Rob with the idea that Annika might "achieve the Grand Slam". One swallow . . . and all that.

I'm sure Lorena Ochoa will have taken note though!

A back-on-her-game Annika against Lorena Ochoa and Suzanne Pettersen while the young guard of Creamer, Pressel, Gulbis et al and the old guard of Webb, Inkster and Steinhauer snap at their heels should make for a great season.

Now where's the Golf Channel with their coverage of the LPGA Tour..........aw, nutz!

Ach, I'm sure some other golf broadcaster must have stepped in............aw, more nutz!

I am sure I watched her win in Dubai in December. I was in the Grandstand when her playing partner dumped it in the lake on the 18th. Does that tournament not count as a win then?

LPGA tour win....but you're right it isn't phrased to acknowledge the existence of, or any value to, the LET.

Although noone, including the Beeb, can be bothered to show the LPGA now that JJB has killed the Golf Channel.

Yes, she won in Dubai but the Dubai Ladies Classic is part of the LET tour. Annika did not win any LPGA competitions in 2007, which is what the article was about. No-one mentions it much but I think she had emotional problems as well as physical ones last year.

Its good to see her back and I hope she returns to her winning ways. I also agree about the TV coverage (or lack of..). No channel seems to want to air serious womens sports of any kind.
