2009 Dakar To be held in Argentina and Chil

Rallying
comment on the article

I think the title speaks for itself here. I mean what?!?

How can an African desert rally be held in South America?!?

I suppose it's almost like holding the British Grand Prix at Paul Ricard - which I guess is a possibility!!!

Gordon

"it is the only tube station to be named after a football club"

Loving that fact. I shall be using it in the pub at some point. God bless Wikipedia!

Anyway, back to the rally...

I think it's a very good alternative to the original African rally; Just analyze the different enviroments that are available. If you miss the desert, in Chile we have the driest in the world. About logistics, is obvious that some people will be affected, but consider the experience that Argentina has in the WRC (and local competitions) and the uprising interest on rally competition that has been developing in Chile during the last 10 years (local and international)

i wouldnt say that the people who live in some of the areas around where the Dakar took place will miss out now that it isnt there for a year (at least). the competitors just turned up in planes, did their racing and left, the population werent even bothered in some places.

dakar in south america is not dakar. lets hope npo can organise something to counter this and have a real dakar in africa. as for aso offering a free rallye in hungary, what a joke. for me they have lost all creditability and i think that will be reflected in entries.

yeah, i was pasing scrutenering when the announcement was made. what a joke. you enter dakar and you know the risks, not one person who i spoke to would not have gone on and raced. i hope npo can pull something out the bag, aso no balls!

Why not just call it " The world Rally "

and have different continents host it every year ?

it definitely will cease to be the Dakar rally once its moves from Dakar. It will have another name really.............

Clearly until it finds its own name the new rally will be called Dakar else we would lose the thread. Besides - it will be safer than Africa at present - that continent is on self destruct.

If it's going near the Andes you could call it the Shining Path rally. Sounds much safer than Africa....
