comment on the article

I was very proud when South Africa was selected to host the 2010 football world cup but now i am very worried if we can deliver the goods.
There are so many problems that have to be addressed such as the power crises, violent crime, lack of transport, corruption, poor service delivery and many more.It worries me that apart from stadiums being built i see no improvement in with any of the other problems.
I think it is time the followers of soccer question the South african goverment on their ability to host the world cup to the satisfaction of the many fans i still hope will come to our country

It's been muted that England could step in if its not ready. From a purely selfish point of view I would love that and unlike South Africa, England could host a World Cup this summer if required. Everything is already in place.

hmmm, thats right, gallant England, home of football, tea and civlised society could step in and save the World Cup from the upstarts of the new world from ruining it for everyone - why do the English think they have a divine right to be involved in everything?

Why shouldn't SA be allowed to host a WC their way and with an African flavour. Germany '06 was great and I am also concerned about some aspects of SA (crime, transport issues etc), but who knows, an atmospheric, unique and fresh World Cup might turn out to be better than a sanitised, clinical one like the last 3 or 4 have been.

Just something to throw in there anyway.....

Plus, quite sure that France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Spain, USA and Italy etc (all countries who could potentially step-in without notice) would have something to say about brave England stepping in.....

totally agree with mobsta007

The ANC is a joke and they use the race card to try and deflect criticism.

They really can't see the hypocracy of their own racist views while the media are too scared of a reaction to challenge it.

I know I didn't put the detail in, it was a hurried post before, so apologies. But do you really think arguing about the finer points of a rape case involving your soon to be new 'president' is going to convince anybody that this guys not seriously bad news. I pity the people who will vote for him. It demonstrates the lack of education and understanding that's prevalent. The ANC are still winning votes off the back of opression claims. SA is slowly sliding down the mountain from it's 1st world status and will soon be indistinguishable from the rest of Africa.

Bobby Heenan - why have you likened the South Africa world cup to Heysel?

Despite claiming to be a Manchester United fan you are absolutely obsessed with Liverpool - and the standing joke of these boards.

Keep up the good work.

mobsta007 - who is this Piep Piper calling your tune? He sounds like your typical rightwing racist nut, using rhetoric with no resource to facts.

Here just two of his more ludicrous statements.

PP: In 1994 the ANC took over a country that was in a healthy state of repair, with an Education system rated one of the top ten in the world.

So Apartheid SA was in a healthy state of affairs?

As to education, it was segregated - if you were white, you had access to good 'nationalist-
Christian' schools, which would teach you everything you needed to know, except how to think for yourself. If you weren't white, only a fraction of the money spent on white kids would be spent on you. One of the best in the world? Nonsense, boy, even if you count white schools only.

PP: A police force that controlled crime.

Only for whites, for blacks it was worse than it is now. Mitchells Plain, a fairly 'good' coloured township, had two police cars for a population of hundreds of thousands. Somerset West, a white town a third the size, had thirty-five. And despite 14 years of democracy, you are still twenty times more likely to be the victim of violence if you are black.
During Apartheid, you also had a government that comitted daily crimes against humanity - against its non-white population, and aginst its neighbours, using the army, police, and shady special forces. Forgot about that?

Really, china, how's your mind?

Mr_Hag, once would have been enough, your finger seems to be trigger happy just like the numerous criminals in South Africa.
The article said a "Healthy state of REPAIR" not affairs! Why do black people in South Africa say it is worse now than before? There was once a police force that controlled crime but instead of building on that to incorporate all of South Africa, now we have a police force that doesnt protect anyone at all! Why has the ANC now disbanded the only unit to investigate and charge corrupt goverment officials, they obviously felt them breathing down their necks.
Oh and one more thing:
At least 830 of KwaZulu-Natal's law enforcement officers are under investigation for a host of crimes ranging from assault through to rape and murder, figures released by the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) on Wednesday revealed.

How much more evidence do you need to show that the South African goverment are killing a beautiful country that once looked as if it has a very promising future being the "Rainbow" Nation!!

South African municipal and provincial roads are in crisis - on a similar scale as the recent Eskom meltdown - with road networks on the brink of collapse because of poor maintenance, bad planning and an exodus of professional engineers.
