Wales v Scotland ratings

Six Nations Wales

Six Nations

Wales made it two out of two with a mixed display against Scotland at the Millennium Stadium.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rug...

My colleague Bruce Pope and I watched the game and have combined to put together some player ratings for the two sides.

I rated Scotland, who have lost their second game on the bounce.

While Bruce ran the rule over Warren Gatland's Wales.

Do you agree? Let us know your thoughts.

Wales:Lee Byrne - Carried on where he left off against England: cool under pressure, committed in defence and continues to time his attacking runs into gaps with great skill. Set up Shane Williams’ opening try and also took a cheap shot from Nathan Hines well. 8

Jamie Roberts - Good, solid debut from the young medical student, his size and pace causing Scotland problems and he will have learnt a lot from his encounter with 83-cap Chris Paterson who started on the Scottish left wing. 6

Tom Shanklin - Not a vintage performance on his return to the starting line-up but improved steadily as the game progressed. Showed some valuable steel in the face of a tough Scots midfield pairing and made good ground. 6

Gavin Henson - Outshone by rival inside centre Andy Henderson and struggled to stamp any authority on the game, also prone to losing the ball in contact. 5

Shane Williams - Won his personal battle against Ospreys team-mate Nikki Walker, giving the larger man an uncomfortable afternoon. Took his Wales try tally to 37 with a fine opener, stepping sharply inside off his left foot to score, then added an even better second going round his man to squeeze in at the corner flag. 9

James Hook - Had a pass intercepted by Andy Henderson that nearly led to a Scotland try early on, but took his kicks at goal well, improved his positional kicking and claimed a try with a neat shimmy and spurt of pace. 7

Mike Phillips - Made some nice trademark breaks and was excellent in his defensive work, but did not direct the game as well as he is capable of. 6

Duncan Jones - Got little change out of Scotland prop Euan Murray at the scrum and was unusually subdued in the loose exchanges until being replaced on 54 minutes. 5

Huw Bennett - Did his defensive work around the field well but too often made a mess of his line-out throws. One particularly poor first-half effort went beyond Evans’ reach even though Scotland were a front-line jumper down with lock Nathan Hines in the sin-bin. 5

Adam Jones - Still has a tendency to hang off the side of rucks when he should be hitting them, but defended fiercely around those fringes when he got a sniff of an opponent trying to break through. 6

Ian Gough - Always put his body on the line for the cause and was the man most likely to emerge from the bottom of a ruck. 6

Ian Evans - Stood tall in the face of an abrasive Scotland pack, providing the bulk of Wales’ line-out possession and enjoyed a couple of rumbles with ball in hand. 7

Jonathan Thomas - Was unable to make many yards in attack against a well-marshalled Scottish back-row but was always the cool head that Wales could rely on. 6

Martyn Williams - Remains the scavenger supreme and within five minutes had seized on two loose Scottish balls to send Wales marching upfield. Continued his harrying role well and was always on the shoulder of his team-mates when needed. 9

Ryan Jones - An early charge-down from the captain set the tone for another fine all-round display. Tackled hard, carried well and proved a steadying influence at the Welsh set-piece. 7

Replacements:Matthew Rees - The Wales line-out improved marginally when he replaced Bennett at hooker and Rees is pushing hard for a starting spot against Italy in a fortnight. 6

Gethin Jenkins - The Blues prop’s arrival helped steady the Wales front-row and he soon made his presence felt elsewhere with some big hits. 6

Deiniol Jones - Only had six minutes to make his mark after replacing Gough. 5

Gareth Delve - A big ask to replace the captain at number eight with 18 minutes remaining but hit the ground running. 6

Dwayne Peel - Arrived with Scarlets half-back partner Jones on 58 minutes and added extra snap from the base of the scrum. 7

Stephen Jones - Really good cameo from the Scarlets fly-half after his 58th-minute introduction for Hook. Scotland had drawn to within two points but Jones added a more direct running threat from 10 to help tie in the Scots back-row and also kicked immaculately. 8

Sonny Parker - Came on in the last 10 minutes with Wales easing away to victory. 5

Scotland:

Hugo Southwell
- Not the best game from the Edinburgh full-back. His poor kick led to Wales first try, he missed a crucial late tackle on Shane Williams leading to their third, and made standard errors. 4

Nikki Walker - The Ospreys man was solid under the high ball but was kept busy all afternoon by the lively Shane Williams. 6

Nick De Luca – Another poor game from the Edinburgh centre. Spilled the ball a couple of times and failed to get into the game. 5

Andrew Henderson - One of Scotland's better performers. Made a few decent breaks and tackled well. 6

Chris Paterson - Scotland's best player and showed why he should never have been dropped last week. The Gloucester man tackled bravely, made some crucial hits and his five penalties saw him overtake Gavin Hastings' Six Nations points record. 8

Dan Parks - Not the best game from the Glasgow stand-off. Didn't kick well from hand and again struggled to get the Scottish backs into the game. 4

Mike Blair - Like last week, Blair was a bright spark on a disappointing afternoon. He made a couple of good early breaks, stole crucial ball at the scrum and gave Mike Phillips a tough time. 7

Allan Jacobsen - The Edinburgh prop was again part of a solid Scottish scrum. He faded as the game went on but all-in-all it was a wholehearted display. 7

Ross Ford - His line-out throwing was inconsistent and he missed a crucial tackle on James Hook which led to Wales' second try. 4

Euan Murray Excellent work in the scrum but ineffective elsewhere. A weak tackle on Hook saw the Welsh outside half cross in the second half. 5

Nathan Hines - A poor afternoon from the man winning his 50th cap. The Perpignan lock was sent to the bin for a cheap shot on Lee Byrne early in the first-half and struggled to have any impact on the game. 4

Jim Hamilton - A decent display from the Leicester man. Won clean line-out ball and always looked to break the gain-line. Tackled his heart out. 7

Jason White - A game White would like to forget. The normally influential captain was quiet and had to come off just after the half-hour mark with a head injury. 4

Kelly Brown - Good work in the loose and scrapped well for the ball. However, Martyn Williams was a nuisance all afternoon and Brown struggled to match his opposite number. 6

John Barclay - Gave away a silly penalty for holding onto the ball, gifting Wales three points. Failed to get to grips with the Welsh back-row, especially Martyn Williams and Ryan Jones. 5

Replacements:

Fergus Thomson
- Late replacement. Found his man at a late line-out but did not have enough time to help turn things around. 6

Gavin Kerr - Late replacement and scarcely involved. 6

Scott MacLeod- On for Nathan Hines with 20 minutes to go but struggled to get into the game. 6

Allister Hogg- On for White after 30 minutes and made an impact. Fine run after the break led to a Scotland penalty. 7

Chris Cusiter- On for Blair and had little chance to shine. 6

Simon Danielli- Great late break from the Ulster winger. 6

Scotland were bloody awful again at the weekend, didn't even notice them get near the Welsh try line and there's only so many games that you can stay in touch (for want of a better phrase) when you're relying on your goalkicker for points. The one time we did break the line it was a fairly simple inside ball to Southwell, why can't they do this kind of thing more often. What was annoying was one of the Welsh tries came from a poor Scotland kick, the result of being too afraid to just run with the ball - given what happened you feel like saying 'what's the worst that can happen' if they do have a go instead of hoofing it. The Welsh try might have been dispute but they deserved it for their invention. Ironically I think the best chance Scotland have of a win is at home to England but I don't fancy their chances in any match really, what else can you say?

These rating are a joke. If you start at 5 being an average performance then no-one apart from Blair scores above 5. Paterson and Hogg may just sneak a 5. Now is the time to look at the leadership on and off the field. Frankly, neither Hadden or White are up to the task and should be replaced. Hadden, we will have to live with until his contract expires but we can change the captain and get someone who can lead,

What i like about gatland is he is looking at the 22 not the 15 jenkins really could'nt do that. We have the best 22 in the 6 nations even if we dont have the best 15. The contrast between hook / phillips and jones / peel is excellent giving us the ability to totally change the style of play at any point of the game, that has to be difficult to play against.
Our front 5 is starting to play well but i still think we lack a world class hooker. but looking around we are noyt alone!!!

There is only one person who has a definite starting place and that is nugget!

Im also greatly impressed with the fitness of the Welsh team. I am not looking any further than the Italy game at the moment as their front five are really going to test us. Last year we had a full spare front row on the bench to combat them but so far this year we have only had Rees and Jenkins spare on the bench. The alternative I see is the possibility of dropping a spare outside half and that means that Jones may not be in the squad. Maybe Jones should start and Hook go to 12 as Henson is not my idea of a spare No 10!

I heartily agree with the many Scotland fans' remarks about the dire performance of our team.
dc82866 and Forthview in particular have put all my thoughts down. What can I add?
Well we seem to have abandoned our quick - rucking game in favour of a dour and physical confrontational style. Why? Now that all international sides are equally physical what is plan B?
Second we used to have second and front rows who liked to get about the field and play with ball in hand. Nowadays the only time the hooker gets the ball is for throwing in and the inside backs ar totally focussed on playing like second rows (Dewey, Henderson) seeking contact. Again the point is...?
Poor old Dan Parks looks like he is herding cats rather than implementing a strategy and his passing is, well, let's be kind and say he puts too much pace on it..

But I won't lay all this on the poor # 10. For me we have been heading this way ever since we stood at the crossroads prior to the NZ WC game and chose dour pragmatism over inspiration and ambition. The squad have simply not played with any belief. And that is the responsibility of the coaching team. Whoever is coaching our (attacking) back play needs to either shape up or ship out. We need ambition, belief and inspiration.
I must say in closing also how disapointed I am in Mr Henderson for not accepting responsibility for the headbutt he delivered on Damien Trei the week previously. It is all well and good being cussed and dogged but honesty and candour is more admirable. Then we have Mr Hines being yellow carded when he could easily have collected the second red in successive Scottish visits to Cardiff. I wonder if this is a sign that the team management have also lost a grip on the squad's self discipline?

If we don't have Rory Lamont, then Chris Paterson needs to be put at full back, his natural position, much better than Southwell. Shame Simon Webster was injured or this could have happened, Webster and Walker showed some signs of promise against France. The solution to Dan Parks is not CP, we just need a decent stand-off. Has John Rutherford got a son? Jason White has not been the same since his injury lay-off, maybe it is time to consider another leader. But who? No-one obvious....

I am wondering if whoever gave the scores to the Welsh team actually watched the match?!? Henson had Henderson in his pocket the only time Henderson got a run with the ball was an interception, Henson never lost the ball, missed a tackle. Sure he didn't do anything magical but he was very solid, steady and assured.

I would also like to the opinionated rubbish by peelisrubbish above there is no place for that kind of trash on these forums. So you don't like a few pundits, at least they've been there and done it, lived the dream we all wanted as boys - to pull on that red shirt. Worst of all is the pathetic pop at Gwyn Jones and excellent played who suffered a terrible injury who has since carried on with great dignity. If you failed to spot the intensity and urgency that Peel injected when he came on then you are biased by your favouritism. I for one will support any man playing for my country irrespective if I feel that there was someone better for that position. Good luck against Italy and good luck to Scotland against Ireland.

I'm fast realising that people do not get Gavin Henson. His performance against Scotland was excellent, not because he made great breaks or showed individual flair a la Hook or Shane Williams, but because of his vision, his ability to read the game and react beneficially . His distribution and ability to know when to pass, when to go are second to none at present. He never loses the ball in contact and his defence is excellent. Like Hook he reads the game faster then most and he is making the midfield tick. There is a long way to go in the improvement of the Welsh team .I expect Italy to be very tough and Ireland and France major challenges. If Henson keeps his ouput up with the weapons of Shanklin Burn and Shane outside and Hook or Jones inside, we will just need parity up front and a few less mistakes and we may be hailing the unsung Henson (5 out of ten!!)as the real reason.... along with Martin Williams, for our success.
