Stevens has always underwhelmed me a little. His consistant poor performances in best-of-9 matches, plus a tendency to crack under pressure, explain why he's not a top 16 player. I can't really see him fulfilling the potential he's regarded as having.

Marco Fu has been in the top 16 before, but is finally showing his best form. Nice cue action, interesting tactical play, good temperament.

Jimmy is the greatest player outside the top 16, but not on the basis of most of what he's produced in the last few seasons. There are still flashes of it, usually in relatively-important games for him.

As for the young players - Cope, Allen, Trump and maybe Michael White all have the potential to be top 16 players in future.

How ridiculous. You might as well say that Paul Hunter is the best player outside the top 16. You can ONLY base it on the form that gets you the points.

bullet. don't ever use paul hunter's name as material for a sarcastic comment. its totally distasteful. Jimmy IS the greatest player outside of the top 16 no question. but we all know that he is way past his best. the question is obviously who on current or recent form is the best out of the top 16. like most i would say marco fu on current form and probably matthew stevens (who deserves to be there).

I think Marco Fu, but Jamie Cope is decent too, and I think Matthew Stevens still has another run of good form in him. But the talent from 16 below is still incredible, I mean look at Higginson last year in this tourney i think it was, anyone can go on a run with some confidence. All have talent or would not be a pro.

I think it has to be Joe Perry. His potting is incredible. He pots the most outrageous balls when you think a safety is a better option. His safety play is extremely consistent also.

I'm no expert, but is it the 17th ranked player?

I would go for Mark Williams - he is provisionally outside the top 16. A two time world champion, won all the televised events in a single calendar year and is one of the only left handers to have lost the number one ranking and regained it.

There is only one person on the tour that could threaten Hendry's greatest ever tag and that's Ding.

And that's about 10 years away so every fan would gladly step aside then. Someone tell Ronnie I take milk and two sugars.

i could of sworn this thread was about the best player outside the top 16 not how good is stephen hendry compared to ronnie o sullivan what is wrong with you people if you only like one player why bother being a snooker fan.

passing_womble

rankings are based on previous 2 seasons so joe swail currently ranked 17 was the most consistent over 05/06 and 06/07 however marco fu now provisionally 13th has been better 07/08 ian mccullogh is the provisionally 17th player at the moment so as you can see its not as easy as whos 17th
