Premier League

Sky Sports News Have just annouced that premier league clubs are allowed to name seven subsitutes as of next season.

This in my opinion is a good thing as it brings england in line of most of european domestic football and of course The Champions League/UEFA cup.

But does it mean the premisership loose some of its originality? Do you have other reasons why it may be a bad thing?

A good move imo, but maybe the rule should be that the two extra players have to be homegrown or something like that

It's been used with success in the Scottish Premier League, although hindered by the necessity to use two under-21 players in the matchday squad.

I'd take seven subs one step further and allow up to five substitutes, although within the normal three substitution instances - so, for example, a club may only use substitutes three times in a match but they may send on more than one each time. That way, more subs could be sued without wasting additional time, putting more fresh players into the game.

On the subject of nationality quotas - why cant teams have loads of foreigners on their books but only play 5 or 6 of them at any one time. I dont see that contravenes any free movement laws, they would still be employed and paid.

I for one will be happy.

We have negative benches a lot of the time - mainly filled with a keeper, 2 defenders, adefensive midfielder and 1 striker - yes the "big clubs" who expect to win the games will go more agreesive to push for a result and usually have more forward options.

But with all teams having a choice from 7, this will probably 1 keeper, 2 defenders, 2 midfield and 2 striker OPTIONS on the bench at the start of a game to choose as the game develops.

It makes managing even easier. I'd prefer a reduction of two subs.

Keep 3 available but only select three - more skill & brains in that - traits uncommon in most managers today.

Crikey ... 7 subs. Villa will have to call up the tea-lady to make up the numbers. smiley

no great debate, will be shame that we are unlikely to ever see incidents like Lucas Ridebe go into goal for Leeds again after gk injury. the increase in subs should align with at least two english players in the squad

The 2 English player rule is a bit racist and the EU won't allow it. I'm sure it will just happen automatically anyway.

2 English player rule can't and won't happen. We might get a 2 nation home grown rule... Or even a 2 club home grown rule.

I'd apply this to the whle match day squad, not the bench though. If a team plays 11 local kids and has 7 foreigners on the bench, it's all good:p
