The Bell Report on Ski Sunday - part four

comment on the article

Hi everyone, here's what's coming up on Ski Sunday this week (10 February, 1915-2000, BBC Two and BBC Sport website) and all the latest news from the slopes.

World Cup Report
This week we will be visiting the Women’s World Cup for the downhill in Sestriere. They will be tackling the Men’s Olympic Kandahar Bachetta course, and although they will not start at the top, so will not negotiate the infamous Salto d’Angelo, it will still be a tough test. Runaway leader of the World Cup tour is Lindsey Vonn, nee Kildow, with three wins out of six races giving her a whopping 200 point lead over the veteran Austrian Renata Gotschl.

Britain's Chemmy Alcott could benefit from a tough course, her best this year a 16th place on the demanding St Anton downhill. Last weekends race in St Moritz turned into a weather lottery with Slovenia’s Tina Maze taking the win, having not placed in the top 30 all season. Fingers crossed the weather is set fair for this weekend so we should see a fair race.

The Men’s tour visits Garmisch Partenkirchen this weekend for Slalom and Giant Slalom races. It’s a chance for Benni Raich to try and close the gap on Bode Miller in the overall World Cup. With the Super Combined win in Val d’Isere last weekend Bode has taken a lead of 122 points, but his form of late particularly in Giant Slalom has been poor.

I much as I can understand the Bode mindset, I think he values the overall World Cup title over Olympic or World Championship medals.

It should be a good fight because Benni will not give up, especially after he missed out so narrowly last year to Axel Lund Svindal.

The best of the action from St Moritz will be on Sunday’s show, followed by extended highlights on BBCi from Garmisch at 2000.

Celebrity Masterclass
This week’s pupil is the comedian Marcus Brigstocke. I was a little nervous of meeting Marcus as you never know with comedians, off duty they can be really miserable!

Luckily Marcus was not the manic depressive type, and although he had been snowboarding for the last few years, he had agreed to ski for us. I have some experience of teaching snowboarders the finer art of dual planks, Ed Leigh being my latest conquest and it’s always an amusing day out. After standing sideways for so long, snowboarders become unsymmetrical, generally their turns on what would be their heel side are great, but the toe side turns oh dear......

Alpine Summer Trek
Expect some more stunning Swiss views this week as we take the slowest express train in the world. No not the 9.15 from Waverley to Kings Cross, this train runs from Zermatt to St Moritz, and is a miracle of engineering form the early 19th century. In St Moritz I attempt to learn a language that dates back to Roman times, and is the fourth official language of Switzerland.

Watch the fourth part of my trek during Ski Sunday (10 February from 1915-2000 on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website). If you have any questions about the new series of Ski Sunday please post them here and I will try to answer them.

"I do watch C4'S coverage but thats not the point i dont have top pay for C4.but I do have to pay send these presenter's to every corner of the globe to live the highlife and go snowboarding and then get paid for it."

Actually, you have to pay for Channel 4 as well. You pay indirectly by buying products that are advertised on Channel 4. Further, channel 4 is largely owned by the government, and (Some) funding comes from taxation.

Oh, and MFIC - this week, I saw exactly the same coverage on Ski Sunday as on the channel 4 show, and neither were gripping!

Sorry, i'll take back the public funding bit of C4..... Just had it pointed out to me! D'oh!

Still, everyone pays indirectly through advertising!

Having stuck up for the programme in recent posts even I was a bit disappointed with yesterdays offering. Ice diving? No ta. Much rather see more travel bits (to know where's good and where's not), technique stuff, kit stuff and some competition.

Still much prefer the new format as I can get results from t'internet, teletext etc.etc. and am much happier seeing real world skiing and boarding (which, as I said above, was a bit lacking in this weeks show!).

AND FINALLY to artist again

the BBC knows full well C4 does early Sun morn - ie saturday racing so really they could us all a favour, stop being unintelligent about it and do the Sunday races, then whatever few morsels there are they would at least be different to C4 (bar ES of course)-

Can I ask if those complaining about Ski Sunday and comparing it with the Channel 4 coverage are also complaining loudly to Channel 4 about their programme being shown so early in the morning?

Why aren't Channel 4 broadcasting their skiing coverage for one hour at prime time, 7pm on a Saturday or Sunday evening?

I have read all the comments etc. rgarding the new format. As a ski program it is a bit of a dogs dinner - just who is it really aimed at?

If it is to try to attract new people to the sport then please don't spend lots of OUR license fees sending Ed to New Zealand or Russia on a bit of a jolly to Ice Dive (ICE DIVE? and how many average people will do THAT?). Russia WAS quite interesting, but again, how many people new to the sport will go there?

Please show realistic resort, weather, equipment and nightlife reports on resorts where WE, the great British skiing public (AND potential skiers) will go to.

Now to the skiing. Blink and you'd miss it. Not only did the series not start until AFTER one of the premier events, Wengen, had taken place but we are now treated to less the 15 minutes of the racing per show. My wife and I were dumbfounded when each racer recently got about 30 seconds of coverage, and there were only about 10 racers or so shown. WHHAATT ?

We now watch 'Ski' Sunday as a Travelogue, and watch/record the Channel 4 Monday/Tuesday morning 2 hour show for the racing. At least there we find most of the racers shown doing the WHOLE run. Granted, this may bore some people but you get a real feel for how the racers ski a run. AND Channel 4 covers ALL, or most, events including the American and Canadian races. Furthermore for the other wintersports enthusiasts they have 2 more shows during the week to catch up on Ski Jumping, Boarding etc. I am a committed skier but I do like to watch the boarders (esp. Boarder Cross) from time to time.

Please also don't bleat on about 'primetime' and 'not the airtime to do it justice'. The BBC spends an absolute fortune on tiny minority Channels and Radio stations that virtually nobody watches - how about a dedicated Sports Channel then you wouldn't have to interrupt the Soaps and repeats. Are you also not aware that people have such things as 'video recorders', Sky+, recordable DVD's and other personal recording systems with Hard Drives?

For heaven's sake BBC, if you are serious, then get serious. I suspect you have nearly lost my wife and I, and many, many other viewers.

I can’t really see why so many people would be unhappy with the new look Ski Sunday. Isn’t it good to discover new mountain activities? It doesn’t have to be all about race coverage - eurosport have that one sorted already anyway. It surprises me that ski enthusiasts aren’t interested in the other areas of skiing and the mountains. Personally I think its great to have a program about mountain sports on the whole and the travel side of the programs great too.

If you are all that bothered about watching lots of race action, get sky! I spoke to Graham in December on a Geneva bound flight. At this time I commented that I thought the show was dying. I think Graham & Ed should be congratulated for reviving a legend & giving it a far wider appeal than just powder hounds. Well done great show!!!
