How good was Duncan Edwards?

Premier League Manchester United
comment on the article

Bobby Charlton has always been my hero, ever since I met him at one of his soccer schools as a child.

I was only nine but will never forget that meeting with one of the greatest footballers to play for Manchester United and England.

So when Sir Bobby described someone as "his hero" and "the complete player" I immediately wanted to learn more of the man Charlton looked up to.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

Only Duncan Edwards wasn't a man, he was a boy and just a year older than Charlton.

The fact that Charlton, a man who played with George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Moore, a man who played against Pele and who has seen Maradonna and Ronaldo perform, still rates Edwards as the best player he has seen, speaks volumes of his talent.

Duncan Edwards died in the Munich air disaster of 1958, he was only 21.

From the reports and tributes that I have managed to find, it was clear to see that Edwards could have become the one of the greatest players the game of football has produced.

I have only seen a little television footage of him but would be interested to learn if anyone saw Edwards play.

How good was he, and where does he rank among the great footballers who have played the game?

Don't think anyone really knows what would have happened if he had lived.

The fact is he died too young and it was a tragic loss for his family and friends. So it was for the other 22 people who died that day. For me he is no different from those others, there loss was tragic individually and collectively.

When Bobby Charlton speaks about him you have to remember he was one of his best mates and he probably misses him to this day, so any exaggeration is of course understood and forgiven.

Great article, great video clips, and very interesting to read the comments of those who saw him play.

A young life cut short is always held in a glowing light, but it sounds as if in Duncan Edwards' case, the plaudits are well-deserved.

All true football fans will remember the fallen from this tragedy this evening as it is commemorated at Wembley, and again in the Manchester derby this weekend.

I have never seen Duncan Edwards play. But I have seen clips of him. He seems to be a very good player. What surprises me is that people come here and pass comments about him not being such a good without seeing him play. If players like Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore thought that he was one of the best they have seen, who can doubt it? People who have seen him play, say that he was one of the best they have seen.So we have to accept that when he died, he was one of the best players.

Could you please explain to me why my comment on Page 3 was deleted?

People who don't toe the party line get deleted? I have no problem with him just the number of people who have made him a deity.

I certainly haven't read all the comments on this thread but it seems to me that what 'jaak198' says makes the most sense.

"Rather than argue over whether Charlton has or has not in the past made sensible statements is irrelavant when all the article was really trying to establish was what a big loss to english football it was."

And I'd just like to add that it's unfortunate that players such as 'Tommy Taylor' get overshadowed so much. His England record was phenomenal.

It was a tragic loss of life and a tragic loss to football.

Hi Angelthejam. Did you ever in your life see Duncan Edwards play football? did you ever? No, because if you had you would not make silly comments like that.
I saw Duncan play many times, and for those of you reading this too young to remember him, I would say this.
Think of the gretest halfback you ever saw play this game, even players today, and then on a rating of 1 to 100 rate him at 100.
Then you can double that rating to get to Duncan Edwards, thats how good he was. Matt Busby once said he was the greatest player of his age he had ever seen.
Angelthejam, if you think we make these comments about Duncan out of feelings of nationaistic pride, or because we have a complete lack of knowledge of this game, you had better think again.
Duncan was very well known outside of England, you should take the time to study comments made by many of the worlds top sports journalists, football clubs and players.
Did you ever read the comments made long before Munich about Duncan and that United team by the players of Real Madrid? of course you did'nt.
Glowing comments from the likes of Puskas, Ghento, Di Stefano, Del Sol, and Santa Maria.
So before you enter this site again spouting this verbal nonesense do your homwork friend.

Duncan Edwards was the ultimate professional
footballer. My father took me to see Manchester United play Charlton at the Valley and Duncan Edwards was brilliant. At one point he hit a 30 yard shot at goal that nearly broke the cross-bar.
His work-rate was fantastic and he was all over the pitch.
A wonderful talen so sorely missed..........

It's impossible to know how good he really was now, TV footage is poor quality and Bobby Charlton is not an unbiased observer, and he seems to be the only one to say he was the greatest ever. Yes he played with Best and against Pele etc. but they didn't die young. It's the same as when people say John Lennon was the greatest Beatle. There's always an element of rose-tinted spectacles. I'm not saying Edwards wasn't great, I haven't seen enough to comment, but to take Charlton's word as gospel is a bit naive. I still have never seen a player with more ability than Best, simply because there literally was nothing he couldn't do, not just measured by pointless stats and medal counting. Whether Edwards was or wasn't the greatest ever, I've heard and seen enough of him to see that he was a great talent and it was a tragedy for his friends and family and for football that he died so young.

I heard that he was told off by his manager, because he used to cycle to and from his training ground. Does that remind you of today's players?
