I suppose we shouldn't really be surprised. Ten more days until we get a manager? Joke. Bloody Joke. And here is why.

The FAI are coming out saying, they want to take their time, appoint the right man, get someone for the World Cup.

This is fair enough. And in any other circumstances, like say if we put Monkeys in charge of the process, I might have some faith. But I can't help feeling, deep in my gut, that the "Time", "Right Man" and "World Cup" quotes are just shrouding what could end up being another disaster.

Out of Curiosty, do you agree with Staunton's comments regarding Trapattoni? www.setantasports.com/en/Spo...

Or can a great manager come into an International Side regardless of player knowledge and get the job done?

Please Discuss.

The Trap Door is Open!

Some points on the FAI motives on the appointment of a new manager:

1.The FAI are saving €25,000 a week in delaying the appointment. Not a lot but this is the FAI we are talking about!

2. Terry Venables played with Don Givens at QPR, Don Howe was coach when Venables managed England; that's 2 out of the 3 man selection committee. Get it? It's Venables.

3. Trappatoni is a big name, but with a poor National Manager record. Remember he was the manager when Italy were dumped out of the World Cup in 2002 by South Korea. He also stumbled his ultra defensive national side out of Euro 2004 failing to qualify for the knock out stages.

5. Trappatoni cannot leave Salzburg until June at the eariest, without massive compensation. FAI dont like doing compensation.

6. Trap speaks Italian and is also fluent in German. His English is as good / bad as Capello's.

7. Trap was born on St Patrick's Day, maybe the FAI think that makes him an honorary Irishman!

8. The Irish players want an English speaking manager.

9. Why not go after Louis Van Gaal, excellent record as manager, and who has a get out clause from AZ Alkmaar if he wishes to become a national manager? By the way he is multi lingual and fluent in English.

10.Finally have the FAI studied our under age teams record since the highs of the late nineties when we won European titles at u-16 and u-18 level and were bronze medalists in the youths World Cup Finals? Abysmal. Clear out of all current Republic of Ireland under age managers required as well!

Lets not make the mistake of appointing someone because fans and players are demanding it, this would lead to mistakes of old i.e. staunton, I cant believe people believe that waiting and appointing the right man is the wrong idea!!!!

It is laughable reading people saying lets appoint someone quick... I can see it all now... appointing Venables now because the panel gives in to fans & players pressure... we dont qualify for the world cup.. and then everyone goes on about how we should have appointed the right guy and how its the FAI's fault!!!!

What is wrong with the majority of you, why do we need someone now? im proud the panel is sticking to there guns and trying to appoint the right man for the job... in regards to the lack of English Trapattoni speaks, are we really so stupid as to not see what England have just done? LEARN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again ill post THE interview... this is why we need him!!! http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bqp64q7kHmw

Fair play to ya red-irish, cudn't agree more! We don't have a competitive game for months yet, sure it would be good to get someone in soon but not if it means settling for 2nd best (or 58th best in venebles case) We, for the first time ever, have a chance of getting a world class and proven manager in Trapattoni and if it means waiting that extra bit then so be it. I'd like to see brady as his assistant also. As much as he bores the life outta me as a pundit, he speaks italian and has great knowledge of irish football and hes not doing a bad job with arsenals youth team is he? Probably producing the best young players in europe for the last decade. This is the chance for redemption delaney, don't let it slip!!!

Ireland actually has some great young players coming up.

Conor Clifford and James McCarthy are probably the best two.

Ireland CAN qualify for WC2010, with a good manager. Look at Ireland today for Man City...a class act. McGeady has so much talent, Andy Reid has all the genius in the world and Duff if he can keep playing is a devestating winger. Then we have Hunt, Steven Reid, Owen Garvan(best midfieler on the park the other night) and Carsley.

I don't really understand why you would contrast the youth team of England and Ireland. Small countries very very rarely have good under 21 teams.

I won 400 quid when Staunton was appointed, and would put my house on Terry if my missus would let me.

Anyone who will put forward an argument about Giovanni Trapattoni's credentials is an idiot!

He is the most sucessful manager in club football ever, so the FIA should count themselves lucky!

I am an Irish-Italian so I think i'm best placed to comment about such an appointment. He did a bad job with the Azzurri, theres no denying that, but he deserves a chance with Ireland. His club record is immpecable and who else are you going to get? Venables?

I really do hope Ireland employ Trap and qualify for 2010 as they should with the players they have at their disposal.

As much as I am a dedicated Azzurri fan, I would love to see Eire do well (just not against us LOL)!

Trappatoni is the right man for the job. He's got international experience in 2 major tournaments. Italy flew through the qualifying process which is what we are interested in doing. He has won league titles in 4 different countries. He has a wealth of experience. That's what Ireland need. We don't want someone like Venables that did nothing for Leeds or Middlesbrough and nothing for England. He got England to a semi-final of a european championship. he didn't do anything special for england. they hosted that tournament and when you are a big country and you host a tournament you should expect to get to the semi-final atleast. lets look at the facts
-2006 world cup (Germany got to semi-final)
-2004 euro (portugal got to final)
-2002 world cup (south Korea got to semi-final)
-2000 euro (holland got to semi-final)
-1998 world cup (france were winners)
-1996 euro (england got to semi-final)
-1994 world cup (U.S.A got to semi-final)
-1992 euro (sweden got to semi-final)
-1990 world cup (italy got to semi-final)
-1988 euro (germany got to semi-final)

lets look at the african nations cup.

-2008 (ghana got to semi-final)
-2006 (egypt won)
-2004 (tunisia won)
-2002 (Mali got to semi-final)
-2000 (Nigeria got to final)
-1998 (Burkina Faso got to semi-final)
-1996 (South Africa won)

Do you see a pattern developing? England did nothing special under Venables. We want a special coach. Someone who has won titles in 4 different countries demands respect just like Capello demands respect of the England players. If we are going to take second place ahead of Bulgaria who have the likes of Berbatov, Martin Petrov and Stillian Petrov we need a special coach. My message to the FAI is if he is the slightest bit interested in the job get Trappatoni. He will pick up English in no time. We don't need Trappatoni for the Serbia game. It is just a friendly! It may be good to have 1 warm up game before our first qualifier. That can be against Norway. He should be in charge for that. There is no reason why you can't pick Trappatoni. It will be a really significant coup and a step forward for Ireland.

Jopabemu

"1994 world cup (U.S.A got to semi-final)"

Eh .. no they didnt
Italy beat Bulgaria and Brazil beat Sweden.

Also I agree there is talent coming through ...
1. You don't have to have the greatest team either to qualify.
In recent tournaments, Latvia and slovenia have qualified. A bit of spirit and belief like the old days, would go a long way.

2.Look who's standing in our way for 2nd place ... Bulgaria. Hardly world beaters now are they. Taking out their 3 or 4 very good players, I challenge anyone to tell me they have a better squad than us. Half, yes half of their players play in their domestic league.

3.Also I agree with the lad who said he had no problem waiting, if we deliver a great manager ... who cares about the wait, our next game isn't till May for crying out loud.

Finally don't mind Jimmy the Lips, God sent him ... on a f!ck!n SUZUKI!!!!!!!!
