US sprint ace Greene retires

comment on the article

Former Olympic and world champion Maurice Greene has announced his retirement, citing nagging injuries.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/ath...

The 33-year-old American sprint ace has been plagued by injury in the last two years and has now decided to pursue coaching and business interests.

"It's a little sad for me but I've had a great career. Because of my injuries, it's better to call it quits," he said.

Greene had been expected to compete in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m races at this year's summer Olympics in Beijing.

I'm telling you this as a Scot without evidence. But if you asked my opinion I would say on balance I doubt Alan Wells was clean. I seem to remember a number of Scots sprinters rose up and disappeared around about the same time. I also remember a certain Scottish 400m runner (David Jenkins) being imprisoned for his part in a steroid drugs smuggling scandal a few years after later admitted he had used it. I have no evidence for this assertion except for his incredible physique and circumstance but that is my opinion. But then I notice that there is categorically no evidence pointing at Maurice Greene yet that is still being mentioned. Hmmm. Wonder what the difference is?

Seen a comment that perhpas nearly 10,000! tests were carried out at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. No positives!!!
This comment from later-
"After the 1980 Olympic games a new assay for exogenous testosterone developed by Dr. Manfred Donike was retrospectively applied to all urine samples. Twenty percent of all athletes (men and women) would have tested positive.
This included 16 gold medallists(Todd&Todd 2001.)

IMO Greene is the greatest 100m of all time. I am very sad to see him retire and it's a shame that there are some that are trying to put the drugs label on him. He might have been a cocky guy but he always backed it up with great performances.

Why is everybody reaconed to be on drugs if they are good? Thank you Mr Greene for your entertainment over the years and good luck for the future.

@ jaco108

oddly enough they say the last Olympic winner to be clean was a Brit

Alan Wells Moscow 1980

now hopefully someone is not going to jump out and say there was something murky related to him because then I would simply be finished

Well then - goodbye.

Back then his reputation was no better than Marion Jones, but the legal processes were different, and he didn't have the length of career these modern runners have.

I saw him in 82 in a 100 in South Australia. He was so powerful out of the blocks.

The word 'legend' keeps cropping up when describing Mr Greene & personally I couldn't agree more. Yes he was arrogant; with his notorious swagger and over-confident interview technique...but fair play to the man, the vast majority of times he managed to pull off exactly what he spoke about!

Definatley one of the all-time greats, in fact I'm struggling to think of a better championship 100m runner to be honest. It keeps cropping up, but such a shame his knee gave in 15m or so from the line in the 2001 Edmonton final yet still clocking 9.82?! I believe he would still be the WR holder to this day otherwise, with Powell closing in fast!

Good luck to the fella with whatever he choses doing. I'd like to see him stick around in the sport...the athletics world will be a quiet place without big Mo!

Another stat to back up the legend tag for Greene...52 sub 10 second 100m runs in his career! I've gone sub 11 seconds 3 times & i'm pretty chuffed with that biggrin

It is interesting to see that something may come home to roost after all.

The Times is running with an article on Maurice Greene and the accusations
