Super Bowl Sunday

comment on the article

Good evening NFL fans.

First some very, very good news. We're keeping this thread open all night so that you can chat about the big game as it happens. Which big game? The Super Bowl of course.

In the blue corner are the unbeaten, untouchable New England Patriots. In the other blue corner are the upstart, unbelievable New York Giants.

Almost everyone is picking Tom Brady's Pats to win at a canter. But how about dem Giants? They've won 10 on the road. Surely one more little victory won't break the bank.

What are your thoughts? Score predictions here please and bragging rights on Martin Gough's live match report to the best guess.

Goughy would also like to know your favourite Super Bowl memories. I'm torn between Broadway Joe and Janet Jackson myself.

Look forward to hearing from you...

despite it being an american football game, it was satisfactory. Aside from all the rubbish stopping and starting and whistles and flags and cheerleaders and commercials and halftime performances and timeouts, it was a dramatic ending to a good game. this is what it would be like if city had beaten arsenal on the final day of their undefeated season. so hats off to the new york football giants.

world champions?
who represented europe? asia? africa? south america? ... just wondering

As there are 32 teams in the NFL and only 16 games with every team playing a different schedule, there is no other way I'm afraid.

Think of it as like the football World Cup. 32 teams split into 8 divisions with the best teams qualified for the knockout stages. That's the same model the NFL are using.

Doesn't Rugby have a playoff system at the end of the end of the season too?

It was an incredible game that ended with the most deserving team winning. If anyone deserves credit for the Giants winning, it has to be the Giants defensive coordinator. Brady was under immense pressure and for a player of his calbire to struggle as he did is an amazing achievement by the Giants pass rush.

By the end the Giants just seemed to want it more and when it mattered, they took the necessary risks to win. Rookies like Boss and Smith stepped up to the occasion and David Tyree played out of his skin with a TD catch and an incredible jumpball catch with two defenders around him. And just when they needed that extra bit of class, Plax put a sublime move on Hobbs to get open in the endzone.

You could see the difference between Brady and Manning in the 4th quarter. With pressure coming, Brady was looking to protect the ball, throw it away or throw it short. Manning, on the other hand, was looking to escape the rush and make a play, and that ended up being the major difference between the two sides.

I have to say, it was brilliant coverage by the BBC. The commentary seemed above average from the NFL network, and they had two great analysts in Mike Carlson (legend) and NFLTA analyst Rod Woodson. The lack of adverts made for a more involving boradcast and they filled the breaks in play with some entertaining commentary and some nice highlights of previous superbowls. It was better than Sky's stop-start UK studio broadcast and a million miles better than ITV's broadcasts which have been frankly embarassing. Two thumbs up.

Credit to the Giants. Their lines dominated the Pats lines and won them the game. Brady hasn't seen pressure like that all year.

That said, I feel cheated. I just cannot believe that the Giants team I saw at Wembley scraping past the worst team in the league just beat the team that was on the verge of being crowned the best ever.

As the season has gone on I've become more and more attached and involved with the Patriots quest for perfection. Their offense was just unstoppable in the early games. I loved the way that Belichick coached them to work hard the entire game and soak up pressure.

The Patriots took on allcomers. They beat four of the other five division winners, and they'd already beaten the Giants.

I'm just struggling to handle how the Giants came to be crowned champions. Not sour grapes because they deserved it on the night, but I'm just shocked that this happened to the Pats.

I watched this over in the States and I don't think I remember a Super Bowl as good. Why were they never that good when I was at home propping open my eyelids at 3am trying to stay awake, with one team holding a 42-10 lead?

Must have been nice to watch with no ads, although this is the one night of the year when people actually watch the "commercials". Catch them on MySpace if you haven't found out already. The talking stain was the best!

Well done Giants for a fantastic performance and a fantastic result. Well done Eli for doing what big ugly bruv did just a year later, and for getting there much quicker than he did. Peyton was cheering him on just as much as I would expect him to, you can tell there's a friendly rivalry between them but neither wants the other to fail.

Bad luck Pats, maybe the season was just too easy for you. Maybe the NFC wasn't as wimpy as everyone thought it was. Maybe this is why they have a playoff system and Super Bowl instead of a straight season.

To all the jokers who think the Americans should have a straight league, forget it! This is a polarised society. Win or lose, sink or swim, red or blue, donkey or elephant, black or white, rich or poor. There's no middle ground anywhere in US culture. And going without a playoff system would have robbed us of that fantastic evening's viewing last night.

really over the moon at the giants' win. a great game.

the patriots typified a scientific, safety-at-all-times approach, and when they appealed for the "extra man" on the field, that kind of action - one lacking in grace or sportsmanship, should always be rewarded with a loss.

great game, great result, brave last-minute decisions by a quarterback with the spirit and the vision that typifies sport at it's best.

Apologises for my absence, my wifi link went down yesterday!

Congrats to the Giants, that front 4, were outstanding, a fantastic game, well worth stating up for! However I would love to know what Bill Bilichick said to Asante Samuel after that botched interception, the play before the Eli miracle! Had he caught what was a shocking throw, the Pats would be celebrating imortality, but the fine line between defeat and victory! I suppose having won 3 rings by 3 pts, it was bound to happen the other way! But to give Eli the MVP after that throw is a joke, Strahan, Tuck and Co, were worthy recipients! Still there is always next year, go Pats!
