Live - Africa Cup of Nations

African Nations Cup
comment on the article

Akwaaba - or welcome - to what promises to be the brutal knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations 2008.

The sparring is over, and now is the time for the cream of African football to start unleashing killer blows.

In the space of the next two days, eight will become four as Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Egypt, Angola, Tunisia, and Cameroon, set about proving that they are the kings of the continent.

Two sides who've already donned the crown on numerous occasions are first up - Ghana v Nigeria - and it's hard to over-hype this one.

The West African countries - with six titles between them - are bitter rivals on the football pitch and will be hurtling into tackles today like runaway trains on a collision course.

No Kanu for the Super Eagles and still no Appiah for Ghana, though Michael Essien seems to have stepped up to the plate in the leadership stakes.

Will an inspirational warrior emerge for Nigeria to enable them to gatecrash the host nation's party today?

The inquest, whichever way that games goes, will no doubt take place here but soon up after that match we have another big clash in the shape of Ivory Coast v Guinea.

Surely Didier Drogba's men are red-hot favourites in the absence of Guinea's suspended playmaker Pascal Feindouno?

Let me know all your thoughts on who's going to win, which players are tickling your fancy, and where you're watching the game.

This is 606. Let's get ready to ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumble!

WELL, WELL, WELL AND IT CAME TO AN END. GHANA WON. NOW THE LOUD MOUTHES HAVE BEEN SILENCED AND PUT IN THEIR RIGHT POSITION OR MAY BE NOT. I IMAGINE THEM BEING SOUR LOSERS AND OUT OF PAIN SUPPORTING OTHER TEAM TO BEAT GHANA.REMEMBER, GHANA WON THIS MATCH WITHOUT TWO KEY PLAYERS OH SORRY THREE, HAHAHA. WELL, TELL YOU WHAT! WE LOVE IT THAT WAY. WE ARE NOT THE FAVOURITES, IVORY COAST IS! EVEN WHEN WE WON 2 MATCHES FROM A GROUP IN WHICH WE HAD ITALY AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC, EVERYONE SAID IVORY COAST WERE A BETTER TEAM BUT WERE UNLUCKY TO BE IN A TOUGH GROUP, LOL! WE LOVE THE DISRESPECT AND WE WANT MORE. THAT'S WHAT MAKES US WIN OUR TOUGH MATCHES. SO GO AHEAD PEOPLE, DON'T GIVE US CREDIT FOR OUR HARD WORK,MUAH!!

My Ghanaian brothers, without attempting to stop your gleeful celebrations over your victory against the Eagles, I would advise you to relax a little bit. This tournament isn't over yet and you know in your innermost hearts that you won't win it, you simply don't have the team to do it. The fact that a team as mediocre as your's beat the Eagles just illustrates how awful the Eagles were.

Is any Ghanaian up for a wager? this isn't sour grapes, my dear late Mum was half Ghanaian, I've still got lot's of relatives there, but I honestly don't see Ghana winning.

ghana played like they wanted to win, nigerian did in patches, but in general, we didn't do anything. we didn't lose to a great ghana team, no, we lost cos there was something wrong in our team (i'll say the coach, nfa and a few of the players maybe?). losing to ghana would not have annoyed me if not that it to an equally insipid team like us that we lost to!
i hope berti vogts knows that we're not used to this kind of lame perfomance at the nations cup and if he doesn't know, i hope he doesn't stick around for much longer!!!

ALOT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THE SUPER EAGLES OF NIG;ANYWAY MY CONTRIBUTION TO THIS ISSUE IS THAT MR BERTI VOGTS IS NOT THE PROBLEM FACING NIGERIA FOOTBALL RATHER LIES IN THE ADMINISTRATION BECAUSE THE WRONG PEOPLE ARE PUT TO MANAGE NIGERIAN FOOTBALL AND AS SUCH HOW DO YOU NOW THINK THE SUPER EAGLES WILL PERFORM AND NIGERIANS SHOULD ALSO LEARN TO ACCEPT DEFFECT AND SHOULD KNOW THAT THEY CAN NOT WIN ALL THE TIME . OLISEH AND KESHI HAVE BEEN MAKING NOISE ABOUT TAKING OVER THE TEAM IF GIVEN A CHANCE BUT I WILL SAY CATEGORICALLY MR SUNDAY OLISEH LOST IS POSITION IN THE NATIONAL TEAM BECAUSE OF INDISCIPLINE AND FOR KESHI MAFIA WAS IS OWN CASE,NOW TELL ME WHAT MORAL OR KIND OF TRAINING/COACHING ARE THEY GOING TO GIVE THE PRESENT BOYS.THEY SHOULD ALL GO AWAY AND LEAVE MR BERTI VOGTS TO CONTINUE IS JOB BECAUSE HE HAS BROUGTH SO MUCH DISCIPLINE INTO THE TEAM,PLAYED TESTED GRADE A FRIENDLIES AND ALSO GIVING CHANCE TO NEW SET OF BOYS.AS FOR MR CLEMENT WESTERHOF,I EXPECT HIM TO MAKE CONSTRACTIVE CRITISM BECAUSE ITS TOOK HIM 8 YEARS TO BUILD A SOLID TEAM AND ALSO KNOWS WHAT HE WENT THROUGH WHILE COACHING THE NIGERIA.AND AS FOR THE SO CALLED N.F.A;IF I AM TO GIVE AN AWARD I WILL GIVE THEM THE BEST FRIENDLY FOOTBALL MATCH ORGANISER NOT ON THE PITCH RATHER IN THE FRONT PAGES OF THE DAILIES.MR BERTI VOGTS I AM GIVING YOU MY FULL SURPPORT AND AS FOR THE NIGERIAN PRESS THEY ARE FULL OF PUBLISHING RUBBISH,THEY NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT JOURNALISM.

"Mickeyrunny", I notice you didn't comment about my accurate prediction as regards Ghana not being capable of winning it all.Perhaps you made the comment before they met a serious team with a sense of purpose in the semi's.

Also, no one called the Ghanaian team useless, that word was your's, the word I used was mediocre. The team undoubtedly has some great players but I noticed a lot lacking. As regards beating Nigeria 4-1 in that friendly, that means nothing, stick to wins in competitive matches like that quarter final. Nigerian players on National duty find it difficult to take important matches seriously talk much less of friendlies. They once lost 3-1 to Togo at home enroute to winning the olympic gold medal. The Eagles were roundly beaten in all friendlies prior to beating a highly rated Spanish team in the world cup.Infact, some of the results in those friendlies, days before the game against Spain were more scandalous than the 4-1 win and were to unfancied opposition.

The Ghanaians fought hard in that quartefinal, their resolve was admirable, the Eagles, apart from about 3 players, played with zero passion or commitment, Ghana deserved to progress. I just didn't feel they were good enoguh to win it all.
