Defoe: What's the truth?

Premier League Tottenham; Portsmouth

Jermain Defoe delivered what he promised to Pompey fans yesterday and scored a goal on his debut. As a Spurs fan, I had no doubts about his ability to score.

Yet, should the Pompey fans be delirious at getting such a proven goalscorer, when, if they found out that Defoe may be there on LOAN and not on PERMANENT deal?

Does anyone know if Defoe's on LOAN at Pompey?

HoldMyDrink, please tell us all how what his missus looks like affects Jermaine Defoe's ability in the slightest? Plank
It seems to me that Spurs fans are annoyed that out of the strikers they probably needed to offload, Jermaine wasn't the one. You have 16.5m worth of Bent sitting on the bench, who has hardly scored for you all season and was completely overpriced. Yet JD, who kicked his heels week in week out, scored a fantastic number of goals considering his playing time. Those who do not see him as a goalscorer clearly never watched him closely enough.

yea he's a goalscorer and nothing more than that. he doesnt contribute to the team play and is exceptionally selfish. give bent time, he will still score more goals than defoe in a season. the fact is defoe was not good enough for tottenham but it doesnt mean he wont be for pompey. good luck to him but im happy he's gone. juande will bring in a better substitute in the summer. guarenteed.

Defoe is a great player and I hope he proves a few people wrong. Stop criticising so often that sometimes you don't even don't even believe what you are saying. Well guess what Spurs fans, when Defoe joined Spurs you all thought he was a great player and all of a sudden you look at him like some garbage.

HoldMyDrink... Tell me who's sharp? Bent? Cos I mean he should for all that 16.5 mil you spent on him? Or is that why Spurs bought Bent, to warm the bench I mean? Be realistic man, You are just pissed because JD didn't sign a new contract at Spurs and he chose a rising team with an aspiring manager rather than Spurs which is going in reverse mode! sadface

All you doubters of Bent......watch this space when he's fit and part of the Spurs squad on a regular basis be warned..he will knock holes in your defences. He has the strengh of Heskey but stays on his feet...Good in air...and if you think Huddlestone has a powerful kick...you aint seen nothing yet.

he was a great player when he joined spurs and he was great for a season, but he's had his chances and he aint any good - well not for where we are heading next season.

reverse mode. i dont think you have watched spurs since juande ramos has come in. any other team would have lost to that arsenal team we beat 5 v 1. we more than matched united. we are playing some unbelievable football. the signs are dare i say it (with 2 or 3 signings in the summer) that spurs are going to challenge for the title next season.

Isn't that what Spurs were saying about this season?
For Spurs it will always be "next season".

Great player or not the stats don't lie about defoe's record at spurs - 60+ goals in 110 starts is a record most strikers would be proud to have. The problem with defoe is that while he is a natural goalscorer, and a good one at that, his all round game is not that strong.

If you watch spurs play game in game out anyone can see that he is not on the same wavelength as keane and berbatov. They seem to know each others game inside out but when defoe plays, he cant spot a run, find a pass and tends to mistime his own runs.

Many will argue that its because he hasnt had a run in the side and therefore he wont get that understanding until he does but the fact of the matter is that he is a selfish type of striker that likes the ball at his feet so he can turn and wallop it at goal. The way spurs play under ramos, which is a more flowing style simply doesnt suit defoe's style of play and we were right to sell him - and £9m is a good price.

Theres no doubting his attitude or his ability, im certain he will succeed at portsmouth and sincerely hope that he will.

As for bent, im fed up with people saying he 'will be great' and 'wait and see.' The fact is that the signing was a lack of judgement - perhaps an insurance policy for when berbatov leaves this summer, i dont know. Fact is we spent at least 7-8m too much on him.

Either way, for the position we were in coming into this season, signing a Charlton player who had 18 months premiership football for £16m was not going to be the signing that helped us push for that elusive 4th place. In fact, with exception to Bale who when fit has looked good, every signing this summer has proved to be a total waste of money... yet the man responsible for wasting nearly £30m on bent kaboul and boateng is still at the club, can anyone answer as to why thats the case?
