Fed Cup- A glimour of hope?

British Tennis

Although we narrowly avoided relegation with a play off win aginst Portugal, the performances by the british girls, especially Anne Keothavong suggests that this year could be a big year for the brits. Winning all her matches, some against higher ranked opposition suggests that finally Anne has realised her potential and is beginning the road to the top 100. Although Katie O'Brien had less success in her rubbers she prooved against world no 13 Patty Scnieder that she can hold her own with the best of them. South and Baltacha in the doubles was pretty much a disaster but overall it suggests that finally sucess could be on the cards for british female tennis.

Although the womens rankings will not match that of Andy Murray, the early season progress by O'Brien, Keothavong, Bally and Cavaday, at the aussie quals and the Fed Cup suggests that we could end 2008 with many girls in or aroung the top 100.

Look lets be honest - if any of these girls make it to the third round of any of the grand slams it will be a huge acheivement.

For a country with loads of money in British tennis, we should have players challenging for titles not looking to be in the top 100. Unfortunately like with men's tennis we will continue to hugely under acheive as a tennis nation for many years to come.

You managed to put a positive spin on what is a disappointing result. We fielded our strongest team possible and still finished last in the group. It only emphasis further what we already knew that British women's tennis is in a pitiful state.

You can look at individual results and say that Katie O'Brien came close or Anne Keothavong, playing number 2, won all her matches but the fact that we don't have a player in the top 50 or even the prospect of that happening means that this is as good as its going to get. How depressing and how will this mediocrity be rewarded? By wildcard entries to Wimbledon with by far their biggest pay cheque of at least £12K which can be topped up in the doubles and mixed. Add to this being fully funded by the LTA to play tennis. Where is the incentive to do well?

What a hopeless shower the British are at sport in general and at tennis in particular.
Mens: "world number 187 Alex Bogdanovic is Britain's highest ranked player with Jamie Baker at 239" Wow. Women's tennis is just as bad. We Brits are good at snooker and darts. Say something about us?

Okoro fan whatever medication you're on it's obviously not working!

Seriously good on Ann but suggesting she's on the road to the top 100 on the back of these results is just slightly OTT. If she qualifies for the French Open then, yes, I'll go along with you.

Sorry (because it sounds a bit nasty) but what success was this at the Aussie qualifiers? Sounds harsh I know but "battling Brits" doesn't necessarily equate to top 100 places.

I know Carl Maes will try to put a positive spin on things but surely the mid-term report should say "lots of effort but still a long way to go to be competitive with the best of the rest". Remember in terms of top tennis nations Denmark, Switzerland and Hungary rank way behind the likes of Serbia, Russia and the USA or even the likes of Japan and China. Before we get carried away maybe we need to beat some of these “smaller tennis playing nations” first.

You can tell there's not much happening in the World of Tennis when we are asked to look positively on the state of UK womens tennis. I saw Anna play at our local club a few years ago She was British No 1 then and bloody useless. Nothing changes as she is still considered one of the girls most likely to. If up and coming hungry UK sports girls want to derive inspiration for a successful career on the World stage I would suggest switching off when any GB tennis woman is given media coverage.

The GB women are also fairly ugly (at least those in the top 1,000).

I will opine upon this result .... WHO CARES ! This along with the Davis Cup must rank as one of the more pointless tournaments in sport.

Good on the girls/ladies for digging deep. ok

It is a shame, tho', that no-one connected with television saw fit to show it. erm

If the BBC sees fit to cover the guys in the Davis Cup, why are they not showing the Ladies also? steam
