Capello Makes His Mark?England by cfhussain (U3209712) 01 February 2008 I've heard of lot of this from so-called football fans, who seem to have very short memories. So apparently, to leave out an ageing footballer is making a mark. I am one of those who believes that Beckham should've been chosen, but thats not important. I can think of a lot of reasons for why it was right that Beckham did not play in the friendly, and for these reasons, dropping Beckham is not a very hard thing to do: age, the moving on argument, fitness etc. Steve McClaren did it, but like i said, people have short memories, and seem to forget this, and the crash out of Euro 2008 which followed, and how can we forget who we turned to during that awful final game. messiisgod (and Ibra's not bad) (U4618066) posted Feb 6, 2008 GrumpyOldRigsby - Rooney's strike rate for England is not terrible at all. It's not brilliant, but there's more to his game than goals. The harsh fact is that England does not have a single world-class centre forward. And England should be looking to play to feet, not lumping the ball 10 feet in the air. That kind of play wins absolutely nothing in top-level football.

MUEnthusiast (U6539042) posted Feb 6, 2008 I agree with the people saying Rooney shouldn't play up front by himself, but dropping him from the squad would be absolutely crazy. He isn't picked on reputation, he's been picked on his current form for United, which has been pretty much brilliant. I would have preferred to see him up front with Crouch, or at least sat just off him where Cole is playing, but the manager knows what he's doing and I look forward to seeing how they do.

bluevasilis (U8397050) posted Feb 6, 2008 I think we should face the fact that England does have a goalkeeper problem.None of the top teams have an English keeper. We are facing the situation that Wales and the rest are ,trying to delve into the lower teams of EPL and lower divisons. That Carson played with Croatia and did badly says it all.James is good as long as he plays locally.International calamities are his specialty.Hopefully not for long.

tenzone86 (U10999729) posted Feb 6, 2008 Gerrard has 16 goals for liverpool this season, Rooney has 10, and they have both been out injured. Cappello didn't drop Beckham to make a mark he dropped him because he isn't good enough, this clearly can't be said of Rooney or of Gerrard...
