Capello Makes His Mark?

England

I've heard of lot of this from so-called football fans, who seem to have very short memories. So apparently, to leave out an ageing footballer is making a mark. I am one of those who believes that Beckham should've been chosen, but thats not important. I can think of a lot of reasons for why it was right that Beckham did not play in the friendly, and for these reasons, dropping Beckham is not a very hard thing to do: age, the moving on argument, fitness etc. Steve McClaren did it, but like i said, people have short memories, and seem to forget this, and the crash out of Euro 2008 which followed, and how can we forget who we turned to during that awful final game.

So, i think an even greater mark would be to leave out Gerrard, for this man has done very little for England when you consider the hype some people surround him with - world class? You're having a right laugh! His performances for Liverpool have usually been enough to satisfy the England managers who select him, but even his club form has dipped and their great captain has done very little to lift his team, instead showing great strength in character, by blaming the ownership problems on recent form.

If we're going to drop Beckham to move on, then we should drop Gerrard to demonstrate that names do not make the team, and that other players who ARE performing for their club at present, deserve their place just as much.

And if you think i'm just a biased Man Utd fan picking on players from rival clubs, i would respect Capello, if he were to leave out Rooney, who's recent (as in last 4 years) form for England has been dire to say the least.

This isn't Capello making his mark, there are lot more players that make a team, not just one. He has to get the first 11 right, then he'll be making a mark.

GrumpyOldRigsby - Rooney's strike rate for England is not terrible at all. It's not brilliant, but there's more to his game than goals. The harsh fact is that England does not have a single world-class centre forward. And England should be looking to play to feet, not lumping the ball 10 feet in the air. That kind of play wins absolutely nothing in top-level football.

I agree with the people saying Rooney shouldn't play up front by himself, but dropping him from the squad would be absolutely crazy. He isn't picked on reputation, he's been picked on his current form for United, which has been pretty much brilliant. I would have preferred to see him up front with Crouch, or at least sat just off him where Cole is playing, but the manager knows what he's doing and I look forward to seeing how they do.

My squad would have been:

GK - James
DR - Richards
DL - Bridge
DC - Woodgate (although I'm intrigued by Upson's selection)
DC - Ferdinand
ML - Young
MR - Bentley
DMC - Barry
MC - Jenas
FW - Any 2 of the 4 left in the squad.

I think we should face the fact that England does have a goalkeeper problem.None of the top teams have an English keeper. We are facing the situation that Wales and the rest are ,trying to delve into the lower teams of EPL and lower divisons. That Carson played with Croatia and did badly says it all.James is good as long as he plays locally.International calamities are his specialty.Hopefully not for long.

The reason he has picked rooney is because he is playing well for Man Utd. He is picking players who play well for there clubs and who is match fit.

Gerrard has 16 goals for liverpool this season, Rooney has 10, and they have both been out injured. Cappello didn't drop Beckham to make a mark he dropped him because he isn't good enough, this clearly can't be said of Rooney or of Gerrard...

Gerrard 4 captain!

Sorry, your missing the point entirely.

David Beckham is not in the squad because he hasn't played a game in something like 4 months, and hasn't played a competitive game in closer to 6. That game was in a league equivilant to The Championship.

If David Beckham cared about his international career, then he wouldn't have left europe for a hopeless league in America, who don't even play on the run up to major championships.

How could you possibly play in a world cup/euro champ, if your run up to the tournament was not playing for half of the european season?

Capello has made sensible decisions so far imo ok. Even if it is a pretty predictable squad, given what's available you can't really blame him and sure, some people will have different preferences.

Gerrard is the best candidate for captain. Owen is slightly overrated. Beckham may or may not be picked when he's playing regularly... hardly contraversial stuff to warrant some peoples reactions. He obviously needs to try a few things out to see the best way to go about getting the sort of team he wants and to test how players rise to the challenge. This is after all his first game!

Give him a chance...
so long as Capello doesn't make Rio Ferdinand captain doh.

For the first time ever we have someone who can possibly bring the best out of England and the players.
these ingredients:Becks, owen,Gerald n rooney have never been put together under a Capello reign 4 England
i think they have alot more to give and should be included in the aquad.
